Nope, thats a mayan cichlid....umm...Cichlasoma uropthalmus. I'm talkin about Red Terrors....Amphilophus festae...;).

Two differences.....

1. The ocellus on a festae is off center high up on the base of the tail (a uro's is more centered and oblong in shape).

2. Uros have vertical bars that do not cross; the bars on a festae touch (making a "V" shape) near the head.

Here are few pictures of females that I found on the net...;). If you look at Jasons avatar, I believe its either of his pair of festae or his female..;). They are more aggressive than most cichlids though...;)..hence the name.

He was sold to me as a RT, i guess ill have to go back to the LFS. Atleast its a cool fish even if its not a RT Got lots of attitude and personality. They said he would develop more color as he matured. Thanks for the heads up

Oh they are totally kewl fish. Get gorgeous, have just as much if not more spunk. Just some people miss identify them as Red Terrors. Some people prefer them over Red Terros...;)...

The pics of RT you posted are GORGEOUS!! I want 1! I want 1!....

Those are the females mind you...lol. Males get HUGE and are beasts!! Up to 16"...takes a while to get up there, but they are gorgeous as well! Females take the cake for sure. Several sellers on this site have them...John (ECZS) has some NICE ones last time i checked. Rapps has some as well, which are just as awesome! They are all wild caught, so their colors are off the hook...;)

If anyone who reads this post has some true RT's please PM me. I am on the east coast and will gladly pick up the fish. or make appropriate arrangements for shipping.

Careful dude....Red Terrors really are aggressive cichlids...haha. They are often kept as single fish tankz and the like...they can own a tank easily. If you can handle that, go for it. They are pretty common though, so you should be able to find some. Mayan cichlids are underrated though, don't get enough credit, they are just as awesome!
