Some beautiful Pearls on this thread. The magic of pearls is that they never stop changing, a light base for instance can eventually turn into a ray some would describe as dark base and vice versa . I have added a couple of pics of what I would describe as 2 very unique Pearl rays, these were purchased by myself from Belgium as 5 star Pearls, I didn't give them this title. However the spots within the spots are huge compared to a normal Pearl which in many cases do develop small spots within the large spots as Blkpiranha's ray above shows. Personally I haven't seen anymore exactly the same hence the reason the guy I bought them from would love to buy them back.

I would agree with this thought. I believe as with most of the brown rays, lighting, substrate color and stress will cause the base color to go from light to dark or the opposite.
Here are 2 pics of the same ray a couple weeks apart.

+1 on the brown Rays, I have four juvenile WC hystrix (thank you aqua man) around 7" disc and one in particular changes from a fairly light base to very dark for no apparent reason ( I doubt water quality on my part as I religiously do a 20-25% WC practically every day).
