hey guys/gals.
those of you who dont know me from yrs and yrs forums.. i have 28 exp. the with yrs... however not much with parASITES!. i brought in a new ray 12 days ago. 2 rays that have been around for years lost color quit eating started breathing hard and died 4 days after hard breathing.
all stats are great . if its a gill parasite what do you guys think? also maybe bactria...

what treatments ? currently im only running a couple of uv sterl. .iits not getting the job. also ... only the rays are effected at this point. upper strat fish are fine.
thx
bart

well bart if you are saying you have 28 years of experience with fish then you should know better from the start to throw rays right into the main tank. also you wouldve noticed the rays breathing hard and started looking things up then and not now.

we need more information to be honest. when you see the undersides are all the gills going or just half or what. plus what does the poo look like is it stringy and can you put any under a microscope. is the bellies red or normal. we need all of the details for a correct id and not just a general it could be this or just might be that and you treat for the wrong things kinda thing.

i usually treat with prazi to begin with and in this situation i would do that also unless we can get a good id right away. and im not trying to be a dick with what i first said but with lots of years on forums and experience with fish you shouldve been on top of it faster and given us better details.

i wish you luck

you might want to try some formalin. 37% solution at 1 drop per 5 gallons.

thx guys... i really have no more info !! thats my problem too.. feeling like going with salt ... if the fish can hang on it can knock out bactria and parasites right?

Salt will not kill parasites. Your best bet right now is probably prazi, but I have found even prazi to be unable to do the job recently. Should've quarantined that new ray first before adding it in with the other 2. Again, like jeffers said, we need a lot more info. If you don't have any more, then you're going to have to pay attention for the things jeffers mentioned.

moving from ray to ray w out effecting any of the other fish, sounds like some type of gill fluke to me. often fish will cough out flukes leaving them to die on the tank bottom but they can be easily transfered to other rays this way.

i would deff dose w prazi. u can also prazi and salt at the same time without harming anything. its a good start

thx vamp been waiting to here from ya !!! im feeling the same as well im gonna try
injecting prazi into a earth worm see if i can get from the inside. next may try a vet see about me getting meds and injecting into ray . done it a 100 times but never in this situation.
really... thx again
