I picked up these two pearsei cichlids yesterday for free from someone on our local classifieds. Did a little research before getting them, but there wasn't really much out there on them in the way of details. Anybody had these before that would care to share?

A couple questions:
Gender?
Can they be kept alone?
How much bigger will they get? (Currently about 8") I found a couple very different answers to size online.
Anything else that you care to share!

Thanks in advance everyone.

They are very peaceful cichlid. At least, my 3 ranging from 8"-10". Supposedly they get up to 12"-14" in the aquaria. The only issue I've had with them is of not liking a new 4th pearsei of same size. The new addition received a thousands bite/scratch marks on body (little exaggerated, but looked bad) and was near death from the sharp teeth of the original 3 whom grew up together.

Dang! Sounds like they did a number on him! How do you think they would do solo? I gotta take a couple fish out of my tank and it would make my decision a lot easier if I could keep one of them in there.

The two pictured look good. I would just keep the two unless you just want one. Pick out the nicer of the two later down the road. Who knows, it might be a male and female and pair up.

I think one will HAVE to go. I would love to keep both. They're in a 125 with 2 Oscars, 1 Indo tiger datnoid, a flagtail, 3 silver dollars, and a couple bottom dwellers. I think one of the pearsei and one of the Oscars will have to go.

I had 5, they outgrew a 150 gal in a little over a year. They were at least 14 inches when I moved them to a 300gal rubbermaid vat. They are vegetarian in nature and have a very long digestive tract, mine could down an entire head of romaine lettuce in a day or 2, in between a lb of thawed peas per week. Males have a slightly steeper profile in the presence of females.

These are over a year already, so if I feed them a little less than you did, and keep the temperature down, maybe they'll stay a more manageable size.

I would get rid of everything besides the 2 Os and the pearsei(It is better to only keep one Os but if you like both...). If you filter the tank at lest 3 times over minamum avrage and do a lot of Wcs. Even then it is better to just keep one O and the pearsei. It would be a little overstocked but it can be done...

Thanks for the advice

I have a Pearsei right now in a community mix and it does not start any issues. It can and does defend itself. It is pretty peaceful as far a large cichlids go and yep these things can eat! Mine is such a pig Ive named it 'Pork Chop'.
