Peat moss for black water

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I boiled 6 cups of peat in 2 gallons of water and i also soaked 10 xl almond leaves in a quart of water for 2 days dumped the water in my tank and Im continuing soaking the leaves since they're determined to float. Next batch of peat will soak a day before boiling since the peat absorbed most of the water, next time I want to yield 2 gallons of tannins.

Looking good. How long did you boil for?
Thanks. I boiled for around 45 minutes, the liquid was pitch black but 2g of water yielded about 1/2g water cooked.

Unless the leaves leech a lot I'd probably do a thicker concoction to avoid replacing with every wc.

Wow. That's a lot of loss. Try boiling covered if you didn't this time. Whenever I do it, I'll loose a few cups out of a gallon at most.

I used to put the peat in the stocking and put them in my filter, very simple!
I have a few media bags laying around that I may use for this method at some point in time. I will probably place it in my overflow Incase some gets out the bag it will got caught in a filter sock.
