I've read alot about putting peat moss in their filter for the tannin sained water, and to soften/lower ph. Is this the stuff that is readily available at local garden stores?

SERA has also peat moss . i have use it and it´s very good. you should be cautious with the use of peat moss because the values of the PH in your tank will drop very fast... so be carefull.

Right now I'm using Schultz Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss that I bought at Wal Mart. It cost about $3 for 3lbs and is completely organic.

Home Depot sells Canadian Sphagnum peat moss at around $ 5 for 1 cubic feet of the stuff. One cubic feet fills a 30 gallon drum.:)

I disinfect it first by either boiling it or sticking it in the microwave. Boiling produces a peat extract that you may use as water additive.

I change it whenever I get around to it.

this isn't always true. if your kH is already high like mine, there is little affect on pH.
