Peat

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
People with black water setups will use peat to add tannins to the water and lower the pH, it can soften water but it's hard to keep it consistent and also quite messy, better of using a ro unit for that. It will give your water a yellow tinge.

Peat is decaying plant matter that is some what solidified and that gives scotch its unique flavor.

TIL peat is used is the production of scotch. But back on topic some people will add a bag of it into a filter or let it soak separately in a bucket and add the peat water to their tank. I've wanted to try it but I get nervous about changing the ph too fast and keeping it stable so haven't done it.

The tannins that are in peat are a natural bactericide (they are also found in wood, and leaves), and for fish that come from the soft, tannin infused rivers of the Rio Negro in the Amazon region or other black water rivers, it can help keep them healthy.
In large enough amounts, it colors the water much like tea (hence the name black water river(Rio Negro)). Much of it sold in garden centers, is sphagnum peat moss from Canada.
It can help lower pH by releasing hydrogen ions as it takes up calcium from the water.

I've used it, tried putting it in bags, filtering water through it, and letting it sit in mesh in my filter. All made my water full of peat particles. If you use it I recommend soaking it in a separate container. And then taking the water from that container and putting that in your tank instead of attempting to add it directly to your tank or sump.
