Peculiar fish at my LFS

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I gotta say that I think its a real irresponsible thing for a LFS to have an arapaima for sale. If anyone was looking for an arapaima, they would ask and that would be a great time for them to order it for the customer. to keep it in a LFS, you pretty much know it will end up in a smaller than it needs tank, whether it be at the LFS or in someone's home b/c they had no clue that arapaima's get so huge. just my personal opinion and i'm not bashing anyone that has kept an arapaima. just saying, i really hope they give buyers the heads up

i've never seen one in a store and i don't understand why a store would even order one to be sold, because there are only a few aquarist that would want one. i'd think that the market for aripaima is a very narrow one. how much was he asking for such a monster?
didnt have a price tag on it or anyhting so I couldnt say, was just kinda blown away by the fact that i was staring at the worlds largest freshwater fish you know? lol

So have I.
Along with varieties of little zebra sharks, moray eels, and once, they had a carpet shark in a tank so small it couldn't move. =(

Zebra sharks?A store here has little pimas from time to time but the owner also has an in floor pond and an in wall tank with four footers in them so potential customers can get an idea of this fish's growth potential. The pond could keep a few pimas for quite a while,he also has two of the biggest shovelnosed catfish I have ever seen.

To play the devil's advocate, it's not different than an LFS selling ID sharks, Emperor IDs, pacu or any other fish that doesn't get the space they need in aquarium. The arapaima is no more or less deserving of appropriate housing than many fish at the LFS.

Good point, imagine how many people buy the little cheapo irredecsent sharks or even the tri colors for that matter, and the majority of them never reach their potential but live a short life.

whaaaaat, you mean it will outgrow my 20gal??!

Yeah I think it's ridiculous that Arapaimas would be available like that in the U.S. I mean I can understand in Thailand or someplace tropical where you could keep it in a large outdoor pond but in the U.S. it gets too big to keep inside and too cold to keep outside.

One of my LFSs has a a two foot nurse shark in what seems to be a 180 gal, but I don't think it's for sale. Poor thing can barely turn around.
