the recent threads on prepared foods got me thinking and I decided to make my own thread instead of hi-jak one.

How do you guys feel about feeding rays you are trying to condition for breeding, fresh foods (whole nightcrawlers, market shrimp, market clams, market squid, frozen whole wild minnows) vs pelleted foods?

Here is where Im coming from. The tank will have a drip so not too concerned about how much cleaner one is then the other, prepared foods are way more $$$ and much harder to get then fresh for me.

With the above in consideration I still want to feed what will best keep my rays healthy, happy, and horny!

I alternate hikari massivore one day and two days of prepared foods, shrimp, silversides and night crawlers. Better to have a balanced diet then just one type of any food.

My daily feedings were Pellets hikari Massivore followed by shrimp this was AM and after work would throw more shrimp and either smelts or silversides in the tank....and when leaving at night i would throw more pellets in..

I try to balance the two as well. Thou out of cost and time I mostly feed pellets about 75% of the time.

Hmm sounds like a mix. How are you guys getting pellets cheapers then fresh? I can buy 2 pounds of shrimp for $8-9, 2 pounds of squid for $2.50, and night crawlers are like $3.00 a tub. Massivore delight around me is a whopping $30 a bag for a little over a pound I think!!

It would be easier to get in those AM feedings before work to just toss in some pellets so I guess that is one thing to consider.

Prep time can def. be a factor. I dont use Massivore hence pellets are cheaper....

that sound like the 13oz bag for 30 bucks..... look on ebay or thatfishplace.com 2.2 is about 50 and about 20 for the same bag you pay 30 for.......

hikari pellets are very expensive from what i see. Shrimp is 8$ for 2 lb's here. But i want to feed pellets too. Surely there is a place to buy hikari in bulk.

so if you feed 2 lbs a week in shrimp would you feed 2 lbs of hikari a week too ?

I think pellet fill up rays faster than shrimp.

i use 50% of pellets and mix with worms/shrimp
