Pellets

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
OO (large cichlid formula) is def bigger than the “extra large fish” formula of NLS.

Thx man. Good to know.

So are all of mine, as stated above. I have both pre Naturox & post Naturox. All of it sinks with a little agitation on the surface. I'm not sure what's up with the hand clapping following my quote?

Sucks if it's not working for you, but I have zero issues. ALL of the pellets sink in my tanks, most right away, and the rest fall from turbulence of my filters and the fish feeding. (see post above)

If it's not working for you, switch brands - problem solved. I would. I only commented as I don't want anyone to think that it takes 2 hours for the pellets to sink. Most hobbyists won't have any issues with the newer formulas. Those that do will have to sort it out.

I guess you got a better batch than i did. Its not hand clapping but shacking his finger in disagreement with your sinking comment.

Thats fair. I guess its best to tell both sides of a story. Some may think the pellets sinks quickly as advertised on the packaging (i sure did). If they update it to say sinking within 5 min to 1 hr i guess i'd have nothing to complain about

Hey while we are on the subject... in that thread posted earlier where you were questioning the hikari rep there was a mention of you working with/for nls or having some sort of business dealings with them as a whole sale rep or something. Is that true ?

Btw.... they turn to mush while not sinking.... then eventually sink and make a mess.

It has nothing to do with the batch. They aren't making a few pails of food at a time, they make each "batch" by the tons. Numerous tons. It has to do with those that have overflows, and those that are running filters, and/or increased surface agitation via powerheads etc. The latter group are not having any serious issues, I would fall into that camp. I actually never even noticed due to the surface agitation from my AC 500's that take place in my tanks. It wasn't until someone with an overflow system complained here on MFK that I took a closer look, and ran a few tests. Initially I did not believe it.

BTW - on the new labels it listing the Buoyancy, and on those formulas states: "High Density: Most Pellets Will Sink"

I'm not sure what thread you are referring to, but I was a distributor of NLS products to retail stores across Canada, for close to a decade. This comes as news to you? I have been out of the fish food game for 7 yrs or so.

Again i'll disagree i have plenty of surface agitation. 2 pumps - 4 returns pointed at the surface. Also have another tank with an aqua clear. Same mess when they dont sink. I did enjoy watching them bounce around under the out flow though.

No not new news. Just wanted to clarify. Explains allot

The vid that you posted doesn't come anywhere near the amount of surface agitation in my tanks. I'm running three AC 500's in 6ft 125 gallons. The surface looks like a whirlpool at the base of Niagara falls compared to your tank. lol But I guess it is what it is. If the new formulas don't work for you, then I guess they don't work. For myself and many others, they work fine.

Just wanted to clarify what exactly, Frank? Outing me to the world, as in the dozen or two members here that didn't know that little nugget of ancient history? LMAO It explains a lot? What exactly does it explain? Do you think that I am somehow paid off to be a top secret NLS mole? Maybe an MFK undercover double agent, planted here to seek out those who speak against NLS, or their MFK/NLS co-conspirators, while all the while secretly working for Hikari? muhahahaha

It doesn't change anything that I have posted or discussed regarding this subject, or any other over the past 30+ yrs. I have never hidden the fact of my past association with New Life, on any forum, from anyone, ever.

No agenda on my part, Frank. How about you?

Lol over 2 pages just about a possibly not so great batch or two of sinking NLS. Of course there's no such thing as a perfect pellet/brand and doubtfully ever will be, and also one product doesn't define a whole company. Hopefully NLS took the feedback seriously regarding that issue (which to be fair doesn't seem to be an issue for everyone) and is or already has taken steps to rectify the issue -- at least they seem to be more responsive than Hikari.

Getting back to pellets in general though, I'll bet most of you haven't seen this at your LFS, it's Azoo's more premium line of fish foods under their 'Ultra-Fresh' brand -- looks pretty good except they too use corn and soybean as fillers :( However they do say, "We use 100% natural and carefully selected fresh ingredients that are human-edible, with no artificial colors, no attractants and no chemical additives. It truly gives your fish a daily dose of nutritional health."
Can see info at http://ultra-fresh.tw/ if you want to learn more.

Not only are they using corn, they seem proud about it lol:

Slight thread derail

I've discovered the Hikari sinking wafers tend to break up and make a mess after they hit bottom. If the fish can't eat it all relatively quick its a pile of green mush. Generally use floating pellets since they appear to be less dense and swell up more when they soak (although the green pellets are more dense than the brown ones). I'll squeeze them gently in the water to get them to sink. I find it more effective to mix sizes of pellets too, so the pigs can get filled up eating the larger ones while the others can grab the smaller ones and not get shafted.

I also have pellets from Aquaticfoods which my fish will eat like the Hikari. I can't get them to eat the Dainchini at all...only the severum shows slight interest.
