because unless you change your mechanical filter everyday the flow slows down and the wheels stop spinning

I run 330's and 350's on all my tanks, as a back-up or as primary filters and clogged filter pads have never stopped my wheels from spinning. They may spin slower but they always spin. I usually get 2-3 weeks before the pads get good and clogged.

penguins are nice I wish that they had a spray bar on the biowheels though because unless you change your mechanical filter everyday the flow slows down and the wheels stop spinning

I would disagree here, I have 1 penguin 350 which has never stopped turning in 2 years and the 2 peng 170's the only time I had on stop is when the impeller was clogged with dead plant material. With my 3 emporers if I don't do a monthly cleaning of the spray bar then I have problems with them turning.

With any HOB filter you better be doing monthly maintainence to provide optimum performance.

:iagree: I Don't maintain every month (Spray bar maintenance) but about every 2 months I do a major overhaul, clean it up and my Emps work like a charm!

Yep, agree with the above posts as well. My Penguins NEVER stopped unless chewed-up plant roots got caught in the impellers. A quick rinse in some tank water cleans out the filters nicely.
The Emps do need the occasional spray bar cleaning, but per the Marineland instructions, a slower-moving BIO-Wheel is preferable to a faster one so that ain't necessarily a bad thing!

if you gotta change filters daily you need to add more filtration. i usually rinse my filters every 2 weeks and end up having to change em every 1-1.5 months.

I have both the pen 350 and emp 280. For some reason the 350 works better and the 280 takes longer to prime.
