I am now aware that it is a piece o' cra-! I do have a good size bag of media in the box as well I have taken the carbon out of the filters. BUT, one of the wheels stopped spinning...IS THERE A FIX ???? Or should I take it out??
Make sure your water level is up as high as it can be. Also you may want to remove a little media too. Those filters need water up high to flow well. It's not really a junk filter if you know how to use it right. I like them for high turnover mechanical filtration.
Bio-wheels are the worst filters. I wouldn't even waste my time fixing it. I wont even use a bio-wheel for a plant only tank. Buying anything else, at all, will likely provide better filtration.
They are pretty crappy..... The only one of my tanks with water that isn't "crispy" is the 75gal with a Penguin 330 and a 350.... this one always has floaties...
The bracket that the wheel sits in may be dirty, give it a clean. Or the cartriges may be clogged (is there water overflowing around the intake tube?), may have to rinse the cartriges.
Sometimes calcium will build up on the ends of the bio wheel axle itself as well as the bushings they ride in...
take the bio wheel out and with a green 3M scrubber pad carefully pinch the axle and rotate the bio wheel...this will remove any buildup of calcium on the axle...
then soak the bushings in vinegar and scrub them real good with a tooth brush...rinse in hot water and replace in the housing.
Be sure the intake tube is seated properly over a CLEAN impeller and impeller housing. Use a brush to remove the calcium with vinegar, and rinse really good...
back in the day, bio-wheel HOB's were all the thing, but now days they seem ineffective compared to the AquaClear HOB's which also have been around for a long time...
