Ok so im debating between the penguin 75 and a aqeon 55/75. The penguin has 350gph and the aqeon has 400gph. But i want to know which filter actually works best, is most reliable and any experience you guys have had. Please dont suggest other filters unless they cost around $30 as these would. Im on a budget and i need 3 or more.

I like penguin much better. Aqueon has better flow, but penguin does have more than decent room for DIY media. AND THE MOTOR DOESN'T BRAKE WHEN SAND GOES IN THE FILTER. My kenyi started moving sand built a mound right into the filter intake, and it's still working.

You can't go worng with either Penquin or Aqueon filters as both are great value filters. Don't let the flow rate difference be your deciding factor in choosing the filter, because the filter media volume is just as important. A higher flow HOB without more filter media will only get clogged up faster. All HOBs have small filter volume anyway so they are only good for mechanical filtration and not much else. Don't let the manufacturers claim to fool you that their products have more bio filtration because they all have negligible bio capacity.

Aqueon has a unique design in that the motor is located inside the tank, so it will self prime and run quieter than Penquin and all comparable fiteres. But I don't like its filter media design because there is a slot at the bottom to lock into the box so it's difficult to make DIY media that seals tight. Penquins are excellent and reliable mechanical filters, even though I don't care for or use its signature biowheels.

You really don't need extra media for either filter, just insert the prefabricated filter pad. For me, I cut my own by buying polyester batting by yard from craft shops. With good water movement, you can achieve all bio filtration you need in the substrate and no need to add more bio media externally.

I prefer aqueon. good at catching lots of poop in the filter bag slots (if you use them I take them out) and there is a blue piece that goes right on the out take (that slows flow significantly) and catches lots of poop. Its a annoying in the small ones since it will clog up fast aand barley run. But on the big one it won't clog just slow down flow. But great poop catcher and easy to take out and clean. The biowheel I had the wheel always stopped. Occasionally clogging up and water going out the over flow. And the aqueon has the motor inside so you don't have to worry about the seal breaking and dripping on the floor it'll drip in the tank!

My fish life is sparked up with Polys :)

With the Penguins no extra Bio-media is needed because of the Bio-Wheels. It is basically a wet dry biological filter on a HOB and IMO is the best HOB next to Aquaclear. However next to my filter cartridges I put in sponges for extra mechanical filtration and 3 pot scrubbers for extra biological filtration even though it isn't needed.

:)

The only HOBs you have seal leak problem is Aquaclear because you have to remove the motor to clean the impeller. There is never seal leak issue with Penquin and all other HOBs.

I have both. I like the aqueon for the self priming and quieter flow. I like the penguin for the intake and bio wheel. In both I have extra bio in pot scubbies and bio media that I bought.

If I had to choose, I'd go aqueon, but as stated above cut your own filter pad down to size, the aqueon filter bags I found lacking.
