Peninsula Overflow Questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm a big fan of my peninsula setup. I only have the return pump, no wavemakers and there is no deadspots in the tank.

It's my first tank with a sump and if I was to do it again, I'd save the money and I wouldn't go with an overflox box. I'd do bulkheads and strainers like wednesday13 has done. I'd go with a smaller pump as well. I didn't think this setup would be so good.

I arranged a pickup tube about 6" from the bottom in one of the bulkheads to the overflox box and the other skims the surface.

Was also wondering about the debris at the bottom and how to deal with that... Given the height of the overflow on these types.

My tanks have a full height overflow in the back with both top and bottom weirs so I've never had to think much about bottom debris

Would love to see the sump set up in more detail

I unfortunately don’t have a ton of pictures of the sump, and I’ve had to panel around the stand for now to keep our toddlers out from under it. The sump is just an used acrylic 75 gallon tank. I’ve have to dig for pictures on my old phone and see what I can find. For now I’ll add that the tank is on a drip system at 2gph. Also, I use 4” Poret filter foam from SwissTropicals as a sump divider, which is key for being able to use a “small” sump for a large tank on a drip system. My pre-filter mechanical is with quilting batting cut to fit a plant pond basket from Lowe’s that hangs on top of a plastic tote with holes drilled in it that happens to fit the 75 gallon top opening and hang from the top. 2 - 300 watt Eheim heaters on a Baylite temp controller and a few bags of clay pond bio media is all I use for filter media with the poret foam. My 6x4x2’ runs a similar filter out of a 70ish gallon tank I built from 1/2” acrylic. It’s on the same drip at the same rate. I built a 3 - 4” filter sock holder out of 1/4” and 1/8” acrylic as the mechanical filtration with the pond baskets wasn’t easy to change and the drains aren’t siphon so they were load. I’m debating about building a sock holder for the 480 for pre-filter, but the current setup has been working and is quiet so I’ll likely leave it alone for now.
