Penn Reel review

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
oh yeah the old ones that were made in us are like rocks those things will continue to preform for years and years! me and a friend found one in the bottom of a river god knows how long it was down there took it out cleaned it up a little bit and i worked like a champ thats how good those old penns are!

I've used the same 9500ss (usa made) for the last 12 years for sturgeon. I have landed over 500 in that time and the reel is still in good enough working condition to land a few more. I have however decided to retire it and go with a newer model.. it now has a place on my shelf and sits there to remind me of all of the great trips.

Quality is NOT the same.

Look on craigslist or ebay for older Penn "z" series like a 704z or 706z (manual) or the SS models which are made in the USA. Even the old "greenie" 706 or 704 is a good reel.

I use my 706zs and 704zs for everything from surf fishing to king and cobia fishing. I also have a beautiful greenie 710 with a manual conversion, sweet reel but slow. A 704z can be had for around $75 but its hard to find a decent 706z for less than $150 as most are in the $200 range now.
You can get the 704s for even less then that. I bought my Greenie 704 for 27+shipping. Personally i think the Greenies are a nicer reel then the Zs, full aluminum body instead of the plastic side plates. Also the emblems on the greenies are cooler. Though the spools are better on the Zs just because they aren't cast like the spools for the greenies.

hey i keep reading that for heavy casting and I guess casting in general that the new penns catch the bail too soon and cause issues?

I've been using a Penn Fierce and haven't had any problems with the bail snapping close. Haven't used a spinfisher but you could probably make them manual bail so they wont close early. Though the penn reels do have a deep spool which is not the best for long distance casting.
