they have NOT become part of the ecosystem. they have been influential in changing the ecosystem by eliminating edible plant species that used to thrive before the horses got there
unfortunately im with you on this one
id rather have them moved, but at least they are being recycled...
they are like cane toads and rabbits to australia or racoons to germany:D they just dont belong here.
they are messing with the food chain once they are gone it will be easier for our native to make a comeback

i know.. maybe they did not have perfect comformation.. maybe the breeder did not like the color...maybe the breeder did not like that it would not be tall.. all kinds of good horses end up going to the slaughter house.. sometimes it is a college student .. who cannot afford her horse anymore..the parents think the person who came to buy the horse want it for their child.. but they are actually meat men.. getting a good profit for a horse that the person thought was going to a good home.. i could list many things.. but educating people is the best thing we can do.. check out buyers.. of all your beloved pets.... the best you can.. it can make the difference between life and death for that pet..

indeed liz. its just sooo sad. when i used to work for the horse charity in london. that was just nasty. i wouldnt neccesarily(sp) have a prob with it (33,000 yes but reasonable numbers) if it was done humanely! but what i saw made me think what kinda ppl are out there, i mean u have to have some sort of no-soul to b able to do a job like that.

Actually, I think the big draft horses belonged to a drug company. There was some drug...I can't remember the name, but they used these large draft animals to make the drug and when the company went under, they had all of these "excess" horses that were left over. There was a website a while back that had many of them for adoption. I can't remember the name of it though...damn, that is gonna drive me nuts now... Something about using the urine...

Due to the way horse society is structured, sterilizing each horse would not be necessary. Just sterilizing some herd stallions would help reduce populations.
i dont like the idea of sterilizing it give the animal no real purpose seeing as most animals main goal is to reproduce and thrive

THANK YOU! jeez! this is the perfect example of "speciests", or people showing preferential treatment of one species over another based on how cute it is. no one cares about how they poison entire river systems to kill lampreys around the great lakes, even though those are native species

its always a rough topic for everyone it kinda sux...alot

but yeah think of all the trampled critters horses kill, along with plants

they should sell the horses instead to responsible owners for a really cheap price thatd be cool

you are still fighting against what we do. we build over forests, swamps etc and then complain about the animals.
florida for example (dont get me wrong i love florida) have built over swampland and then complain about the gators coming in their yards and eating their dogs etc, when the gators have every right to be there and are then taken away to be killed.
what right do we have to kill them???
