:iagree: not a smart move, if you care about your job. Places like Petsmart or more concerned about making a sale, instead of doing the "right" thing.
I was at a PetCo about a month and a half ago now and noticed they had dwarf frogs for a buck each. i told her i wanted all of them and she went into the how large a tank blah blah.

My answer was basically it didnt matter, they were going in to my 100 and 220 but they were likely going to wind up as food.
She said she wouldnt sell them to me and that i had to buy feeder goldfish if i wanted feeders and not frogs which is BS.
When did a frogs life (or guppy or molly, etc) become far more important than a goldfishs?

Yeah, that's a tough one. I agree, that if you care about your job, doing the right thing is a conflict of interest. However, I applaud you for at least trying to steer them in the right direction. No consolation if you get fired, but obviously you were thinking about the welfare of the fish more than your job. Morally, you did the right thing. Financially, you could end up paying for it sooner or later.

You know the old saying " the customer is always right", well, it doesn't apply to sheer stupidity. Poor fish....

that's kind of funny. i rarely buy from petco or petsmart but i never release any info about my tanks, none of their biz!

lag double post -__-

at the end of the day i still told em that if they wanted 'em they couldn't have the 14 day guarantee (which is what we've been told to do as a new rule if people won't listen). it's just frustrating that they instigate a 30 minute conversation asking lots of questions like they were legitimately interested in learning about an alternative and then turned around at first opportunity and bought the O's anyways, making sure they got the guarantee because they knew they were doing the wrong thing and the fish would probably die? that was the frustrating part.

I was at walmart, and found a couple wanting to buy a goldfish and a common pleco for a little 2 gallon tank. I was able to explain to them it was a bad idea, and got them to buy a 10 gallon setup, a heater, and told them smaller fish like tetras are best.

Retail is no place for a high horse. Refusing service is the opposite of why you were hired, and your days are numbered if people start getting the manager.

I suggest not working with animals.

Agreed, I'd fire you if I were the manager.

Don't worry NC, you would not be fired if you worked where I work.
Where I work, if you don't have the right size tank or cage, you don't get the fish or hamster or whatever. Its simple.
I agree, we would make more money if we sold animals to anyone and everyone, but pet stores are different if the owners are pet owners as well :)
The welfare of the animal should be more important than the mighty dollar at pet stores in my mind. Obviously our customers agree with that theory.

I worked at petsmart years ago, and I was told that we were allowed to refuse sales of live animals to people who were obviously going to torture them to death slowly.
I found that most people if you presented yourself as a knowledgable individual would listen. They then came back for supplies, and more tanks, and info. That's what keeps the petstores in business, not a pair of small oscars. It was only a problem once, when a fella wanted to buy feeder fish for a goldfish swallowing contest. I told him that our feeders were not fda approved.
