well when they die theyll know better

At least you tried... it's the exact opposite at the petsmart near me. The people are mostly snotty to you and think they know everything when they really don't..

There is however one knowledgable employee who knows fish and is actually interested in my breeding projects. :)

I was in a Petsmart and the fish sales person was telling this couple that the fish they were buying preferred groups (forgot which kind, was tetras or barbs). The girl wanted only 1 of them and 1 molly or something. When the employee said that the girl just said rudely that he's just trying to make more money and sell them more fish. Well as we know in this case the store isn't just trying to make more money but telling it how it is and that the type of fish needs a school. The couple decided to look around some more and saw me. The guy asked me if I knew about fish and I said a little bit. He asked me if in fact some fish needed to be kept in schools. I told him that was correct and the girl got really mad at me. I said I didn't work there so don't get mad at me but the employee was stating the truth. They can do what they want but if they want only one of each fish they should probably choose from the non schooling types and can get a nice guppy and molly or something.

People believe what they want to believe. Most shoppers like these already have their mind made up when they come in or when the first see what they want. The customer is always right unless they are dealing with lives of other creatures. As a seller of animals of any kind I think you have a right and moral duty to educate although in the larger chain stores it could cost you your job. You should be able to print litature about the fish. I think Petco and Petsmart both have printed info which would probably state which fish want schools too.

Good job OP!

usually I don't care about guarantee or not because I don't mind take a few hours looking for the good fish and that fish will not die !

The guarantee should require us to test the water params first. It would literally save the company millions of dollars and deter rtards

At my petsmart they use test strips which are notorious for being inaccurate. They told me my water was "fine" and I could "add more fish" when I was in the middle of cycling. I declined and bought an API liquid kit and what do you know, I had unsafe off the chart levels of nitrites.

Agreed, I'd fire you if I were the manager.

good to know that you'd fire somebody for trying to convince somebody to buy a $4 fish instead of 2 $5 fish that will probably come back within the next week dead for a full refund. lol.

I wasn't rude to the people, in fact i've been informed to start refusing refunds by my manager specifically. I just found it sad that they obviously knew the fish would potentially die and instead of listening just went and found somebody else and basically spewed all the information i'd just given them to get what they wanted.

I say more power to the OP... its staff like the OP that actually end up bringing in more business in the long run, especially when the customers (at least serious ones) learn that you are actually helping them try and setup a better environment for their pets...

Like theres one shop over here i always frequent that sells plants and small fish, the owner is always very honest and will tell you things as they are, and i have to say, his shop is pretty much always packed unlike a lot of the others on the same street...

I recently tried to buy some bala sharks from petco. The employee said i needed at least a 210 gallon tank in order to keep those. I told him I had a 210 gallon, but he didn't believe me and wouldn't sell me the fish. I later came back in with pictures of my tank, and spoke with both him and the manager. I'm pretty sure he got in trouble, and the manager let me have one of the bala sharks for free.

Good job for trying to do the right thing!! If we had more people like you the world may not be such a garbage dump, but that's a rant for another time hahaha.
