Anybody using an automatic litter box? I hate messing with it SO much but have heard such mixed reviews on products. Somebody direct me toward a good one. My largest cat is about 20lbs for reference....

what the duce is a automatic litter box?

lmao, it's the thought that counts.

OMG, that is epic. but would it be more hassle then anything, like maintenance?

that's what i'm trying to find out ;)

I had one. I think it was the Litter-Mate Elite, or something. It doesn't give the litter enough time to clump before it scrapes, so you end up with this sludge-y pee/litter layer at the bottom of the box. Plus, you end up touching the thing more than a normal litter box because you've got to empty the bin, and who the heck is going to keep buying the plastic bins (they're made to throw away but they're really expensive) so I used one over and over and it got really disgusting. I mean, I changed it sometimes, but not every time it filled up, because I have 2 indoor cats and it filled up really quickly. Plus, the thing is really kind of difficult to get in there -- there are these tiny tabs, and you have to fit each one under the slots in the box just perfectly in order for the thing to work. If one comes undone, then the litter gets pushed into the gap between the collection tray thing and the box itself, which means it falls onto the carpet.

I hated that thing. It was so expensive, so I didn't want to throw it out, but it was a pain in the butt. I was thrilled to see it go into the garbage.

I ended up going with a regular litter box and the Litter Locker, which is like a Diaper Genie for cat poo. You scoop the box, and put it in the Litter Locker, and turn the wheel, and it seals it up inside of the unit. This way, you don't have to run to the dumpster every time you clean the box. The refills are kind of expensive, but they last a long time, and keep the odors locked inside the unit.

As for litter, you can't go wrong with Fresh Step scoopable.

+1. I hate these dang things. It was a glorious day in my life when I trashed it. The boxes that the "deuce" goes in are really expensive, so I too reused... nasty. The litter is expensive, but the dang thing won't work with normal litter (the motor on the rake isn't strong enough). Plus, it's not scented litter and, since cats don't convert ammonia to urea, you get that nice cat piss smell.

I've heard the one that washes the litter ends up smelling like burnt cat poop from the heated drying of the litter/un-sifted poo particles.

My cat refused to use it. She tried once and then saw the scooper go and freaked. She never touched it again.
