I have a 175g tall tank with 16 discus in there. I dont know why or what makes them start pepering. It is really bad. I will post some pic. later. Water is fine, Ph 6.5, nitrite 0, ammonia 0, nitrate 10ppm. I change the water two times a week, 50% at a time. I use tap water. I got them when they are baby about 8 months ago. I got them from Jack Wattley. Any info or help you guys can give me??

peppering is somewhat genetic, but stress, background color, substrate, can all play a role. I kindof like the look of peppering myself..........Best bet to have the least is white sand for the bottom, and as light of a background as possible. Have any pictures?

Funny you just post this because I was gonna post the same exact question. Bought a few discus from breeder couple weeks back and got a small silver pigeon. When he was in the bare bottom tank he didn't have any pepper spots but as soon as I bought him home he got spots on him. Don't think its stress cus he was eating hours after arrival and is bolder than most of the existing discus I have in my tank. Maybe its a natural camoflauge thing, I have dark substrate and dark colored plants. My pigeon blood red has it to and posting makes me realize when I bought him almost a year ago, he didn't have as much pepper on him.

Peppering is 100% genetic. It is a trait of the Pigeon Blood genetic line. It comes and goes, just like stress bars do on a non-PB discus do. Though most PB discus show their peppering all the time. The best way to reduce it is to put a lighter background on the tank, use a lighter substrate on the tank as well. Increasing your lighting can help sometimes too. It will never totally go away, but you can control it somewhat.

Wait'n on those pics, be sure to get all angles of the tank so we can see what sort of substrate and backgrounds they're dealing with...

It will be tomorrow before I can post some pic. my tank is bare bottom and I use black background.
