Isnt a marb red a strain of pigeon? I know that directly after a wc my pigeons look there best, peppering gone and after about a half hour it returns just a little bit. Some pigeons will have the entire gene bred out while others will still have it. Hans told me it may get better as the fish mature. I was using the dark blue plastic back ground and switched to a light blue back ground and it didnt help. I hate the color I chose. I also use silica sand or pool filter sand.

when you got yours, were your marlboros an orangy solid color with a little flaming red/black in their finnage & peppering?

I am using the coral sea background (dark blue overall) so it is a bit dark but the lighting helps. but still have peppering but some have come out with vibrant colors!

Marlboros do have a bit of pigeon genes. It seems to me any orange or red discus get the peppering.

Ya the fins are black and the peppering is across the tops of the fish and on 1 thee is a little peppering on the face. Lighting isnt going to really make a difference. They are going to try to blend to there surroundings. Think of a chameleon on a dark branch, he is going to match the branch regardless of the sun light. All fish are going to be different and they will change a ton as they mature.

just thought i would mention that peppering in discus does not get better with age it will stay the same or get worse

Dark backgrounds and substrate will cause your discus to pepper also stress and diet have an effect on the Marlboro/Pigeon strains,we have found that no matter what you do some of those strains will pepper no matter what you do.Even with bb bottom tanks and very light backgrounds some will still pepper.

Discus are easily stressed, new environment, changes in water parameters etc. can also cause peppering.

It's not a desired trait if you want to sell the fish. I had a chance breeding pair (red pigeon, turquoise) that produced an entire brood of red and blue spotted/striped offspring that matured to have intense speckling. No local stores want them...

It usually gets worse over time with age. Good breeding with careful culling of fry can all but eliminate peppering. I have some some young 4" Checkerboard Pigeons that are totally clean so far, knock on wood....

well, I guess I will be stuck with my peppers. I don't mind but I guess if they ever spawn, I won't be able to sell them to any LFS. maybe to local aquarists.

Well, you would just have to wait until the fry grew large enough to start showing color, and cull out all the ones that are covered with pepper. I wouldn't be surprised if you couldn't sell peppered discus to at least some LFS. I've seen horribly peppered discus on this forum and others that came from LFS. I know a couple of breeders with national reputations that sell their "less desirable" discus to pet stores dirt cheap rather than risk tarnishing their reputation as a quality discus breeder, seller.
