the ones in the net look big enough to breed

the biggest one on top was almost 2" id say. i wish i thought to put a quarter in there for perspective.

so convicts can breed young??! i took about 10 of them home in hopes for breeding (i chose mostly small ones...) i sorted through them and only chose the ones who have orange markings on their belly (not very many) and put in 2 dark colored ones who didn't. but all of em are about an inch or less right now..

im kinda nervous to say the location in hopes that nobody poisons the pond or over fishes them, not to sound stingy... but it's not exactly a public fishing spot and i don't want them to put up any "no fishing" signs around it. so if you go, be discrete (stealthy if possible) and VERY considerate...

i can PM you the location and the exact spot that this catch-rate is possible from. but again, its highly convenient for us to have this place available and unenforced as of right now. lets keep it that way :D

Yeah what pond was this one??? any GT's or Jags in there???

i WISH... do you know where any GTs, Jags, or JDs are located here??? i never even heard of them inhabiting any place.

the pond is man-made and no native species in it AT ALL. ive caught everything in the pond that inhabits it (guarantee) and heres the list:

Common
SwordTail Tetras
Guppies
Mosquito fish
Crayfish
Convict cichlid
Silver Tilapia

Uncommon
Sailfin Mollies
Tadpoles
Walking catfish
Smallmouth Bass
4+ Terapins (AWOL pet)

Rare
2x Golden Koi (AWOL)
Red belly Piranha (AWOL) - i think i caught somebody's illegal pet last year ... didn't keep it :(
Gulper Catfish
Odd Plecos (look like Hershey Kisses)

Good tuc bait. Second only to the Hemichromis elongatus (5 star generals).

Though the convicts I used to catch were a bit larger. Worm and bobber though, not netting.

GT's and jags are on the UH campus.

oh yea, we got all sizes of convicts in that pond. its just that i scooped the net near the shallow end where the juvies hang out. all the big tilapia and adult convicts are further into the pond itself. wooow... its really bad to say this, but considering my special little pond is the primordial soup of invaders maybe i shud head over to UH, catch some GTs and stock em up here! i was thinking about doing that for JDs but i procrastinate alot... and its only wishful thinking, but would silver aros survive in a hawaii pond ? XD

oh by the way, how fast do convicts take to go from fry to mature reproductive adult?

no more than 3 months. I'd doubt it takes them that long in the wild though.

well it looked exactly like this. i only caught it once, like the other rare fish (except the koi). it was just over 1'. probably awol too but there are more than one in there, (maybe 3), you can see them with a high power flashlight and some water-clearing oils at night. not as huge as some google images ive seen, tho.

i know what ur thinking, but you would be SURPRISED what you can find in the mountains and deep enough ponds... end results of illegal pet keeping. there are people's pythons roaming the mountains too you know.

Very cool!
Whish we had fish like that in our ponds in Holland.
Would be esspecially nice in winter.
Iceskating and watching fish at the same time!!!

are u serious a gulper cat that is awesome
