Performance mufflers?

A question for the car experts:

Is there any performance mufflers that don't make noise? I don't want sonic turbos or flowmasters. They are too noisy.

Its for my new(used) car(Chevette), that needs the muffler replaced.

It seems factory style ones rob the car of a few horsepower.

If you want some performance with quiet, just get a chambered muffler that has a bigger inlet and outlet. The turbo mufflers are just glorified glasspacks, they just have more packing in them allowing packing to be thicker and absorbing more noise.

Chambered mufflers are better at canceling noise, but they diverert flow to cancel noise. If you upsize the muffler (say from 1.5" to 2" or 2.25") you will increase flow to compensate for the restrictive design. I did the same with the whole exhaust on my Corolla, as a 2" mandrel bent exhaust would have been ideal, 2.25" crush bent is the next best thing.

there are many chambered mufflers (flowmasters for one) that are far from quiet.

I'm the opposite. I go for the loudest exhaust I can find. I love to hear the engine/exhaust sound of a poweful engine.

they make different flowmasters from loud to quiet. I have one and love it. You get more power and sounds loud. If you want they have softer ones that still have good performance.

I think you would laugh at the mere 62 horsepowered Chevette if I drove it down your street with a loud muffler.

i forget what company makes it but they sell a set thats interesting. its a y pipe(or 2) that u weld in. in it, it has baffles. with a remote switch u flip it and it flips to flow down one pipe. flip it and it goes to another pipe. flow one threw ur stock exuast. run the other through a loud but performance based exaust(cant spell ) or just end it there
