Perruno catfish! Is it out there?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well still loooking for information on this fish and come across this on PC forums.

http://planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=15527&hilit=perruno

But if you dont want to read it all here's the interesting bit,

"This is one of those long standing misidentifications in the hobby. Perrunichthys perruno comes from the Maracaibo Basin of Venezuela and it is doubtful it has ever been exported from the trade. There is a photo of a real Perrunichthys perruno in "Los Peces Del Rio Catatumbo" and it looks nothing like any fish in the hobby. It does not even have a similar light brown/dark brown camo pattern like Leiarius barbis. ";)

Bump for a sticky :)

After going through this thread I will admit that the Perrunos I had 10 years ago were, in fact, Marbles.....heheheh.

lol, it's difficult for most people to grasps the differences, and they see what suppliers say as set in stone, and that they could never be wrong. I created this thread so to help others take a look. I just see way too often people calling their marbles perrunos. I know it's barely a noticiable difference, but I like to know exactly which cat I have so that I can study their unique behaviors. If we mix them up and just yup that's a perruno cause the guy I got if from said so, then when we go to give advice on these fish we could be giving advice on a totally different fish. I see a lot of people giving advice on rtcs and tsns based on the hybrids. I myself am guilty of comparing, but that's all in fun to see what traits they share with their full blooded cousins.

what is there to expect, in terms of traits and behaviour from a TSN /Marble? And in what is it different from an RTC/ Marble and, in both cases, from pure TSN and RTC stock?

looks like BWB might not have his prized perruno after all lol

Very different. My marble x tsn hid all the time and was very aggressive. I had him in with my pure marble and he ended up pummling it to death. It was larger than him. If I would put my hand close to his hiding spot he would bit me lol. Kinda skittish sometimes like tsn, but they get over it. My marble x rtc is very calm and keeps to himself. Not very aggressive at all. He eats a ton like a rtc, but unlike my rtc perfers to hide alot. Kinda skittish as well. Looks wise a tsn x marble when full grown looks like it is half and half definitely. The stripes are spots though, and the snout is a little more blunt than tsn. Internally the skeleton fuses in the vertebrae as tsn and marble have different number of vertebrae. Mine's skull was slightly curved as well. All tsn hybrids are prone to the same wierd birth defect as normal tsn from breeders in asia. Their skulls in some cases will curve downward. Same is true for rtc x tsn. IMO rtc x tsn act just like rtc, and look a lot like tsn with a broad head. One thing is for sure they are all gorgeous cats, and well worth the time, effort and money.

thank You Necro, for a very clear and concise explanation...

Necro, good idea to start this thread. Very informative and interesting.

YW, let the debate continue!!! Sometimes when I look at statistics I wonder if they are truely seperate species. I even wonder looking back at the one supposed true perruno I saw many years ago was actually one. Just seems that it was slightly different than many marbles......
