For those of us who love the big fella's personality and looks, but only have 125 gallon tanks and smaller, what are our options?

I think pictus cats work well for smaller tanks, what are some good, active catfish that stay around a foot or smaller? Where should I start looking?

I have a RTC hybrid that will get huge and I will move him on, but I have grown attached to the activity, look, eating ability. Plus my kids really enjoy him also (we love River Monsters) So what should I try instead?

Thank you for your time.

Joe

Bullheads, in a 125 you could do yellows, browns, or black.

I'll give you more info if you're interested in them, but I'll try not to ramble :)

Thank you for the responses guys, I will be looking those up over the next few days. I was searching older threads also. The bullheads sound cool, especially if they could go in unheated tanks, which is always a bonus. Not sure about good sources for them though, any hints? I belong to NANFA, but not sure who to try for the different bullheads.

I know they can be pricey but Tigrinus are cool doofy goofy looking, your kids will love em.

Nice to find a fellow nanfa member! Zimmerman's has Florida brown bullheads but be warned, the Florida strain will push 18" easily. Jonah's aquarium currently has Florida browns, yellows (my favorite), and flat bullheads (flats stay smaller, normally 10-12" range). Yellow get 14-18 when adult, browns get 16-24, blacks get 8-24, flats snails and Spotteds get 10-12.

heres jonah and brians sites if you've never seen them.

I plan on getting a bullhead fairly soon as well, either as a growout for my soon to be native tank or the 180 I'm getting next year but I know my source: good ol' fashion rod and reel :)

I may not have kept or am keeping any but Ictalurids are probably my favorite and most studied family of fish. You can learn a lot about them from catching them, scuba diving with them, and of course Planet Catfish.

Eclipse cat
Asain bumble bee
Giant bumble bee
Jaguar cat (if you can find one)
Too many syno's to mention.
