I have only ever had a fahaka and found it very owner interactive and personable. I want another puffer and am leaning towards a mbu as I heard they are by far the most personable. Only drawback to the mbu is the size so was wondering are they? If you had to choose between the two what would you do?

I am looking for people who have actually owned both species not just read about them.

Thanks

If you can house a mbu then mbu 100%. The only thing I dislike about my fahaka is the no tank mates. I actually have mine with a convict, but he looks like he has been thru a war.

i have seen both and if it was not the size of tank requirment needed for mbu, i would have selected Mbu. i love my fahaka as well but i like the looks of mbu over fahaka. I have never owned a mbu so i will not comment on personality.

All fahaka varies, although most fahaka are mean little bastards. Most of them will be a NO/NO tank mates and also known as one of the worst temperment puffers out there. Some are tolerable as long as they don't move around too much like pleco etc etc etc. Mbu tend to allow tank mates compared to fahaka. Not saying the Mbu doesn't get aggressive, I've seen em become a killer like fahaka are. But as go for the Mbu, most of them will allow "some" tank mates such as neon tetras or other fish that moves too fast, it won't bother.
Other than that, if you got the tank size and the money. You can get yourself an Mbu, it might hurt your wallet...or purse I don't know...:p

Having owned both...

Fahaka has a more up and down oval body shape when viewed face on.
MBU are round or wide oval shaped

I spent $15 for my Fahaka and $100 for my MBU and will say that the MBU was worth the money and the Fahaka not so much.

My Fahaka wasn't as personable, slightly more aggressive compare to my MBU (which I guess compared to others, not so aggressive), very temperamental in comparison to the MBU as well when it comes to feeding, water changes, messing with the tank.

I own both ! Fahaka is like jekal and hyde most are soloist! Mine is very interactive and i love that!
Now mbu mine has had a few hills to climb and rite now is not to active but hopefully will come around and, alot almost everyone keeps them with other fish, I had to section mine off from the chiclids thwey were picking at him so ...
But if this guy doesnt come around i'm defitnley getting another one that is in good health so he can be in a comunity tank which has been my goal for the past year!
Hope that helps some!

I have kept both. Fahaka are really shy when small but after they get sum size they are great fish to observe!!!! However Capital Puffer for me Is the African Giant The MBU plus they play well in the box with others long as the box is huge!!!! I have seen an MBU chew up a loach tht got too close while it was feeding. Did not eat it just chewedem up and went back o finish his meal of clam.
