At first I was thinking my little runt of a Peru Mono was male. As of late it's been circling around an area in my tank as if it's trying to build a nest. Blowing and dusting around the area, flaring at the other PBASS as it get's close. Constantly chasing and bashing on my Kelberi's. I even noticed a little indent on it's forehead as it looks to be growing a little hump.

However, I believe females could also develop little humps as well, correct? Then noticed the exposed tubes hanging down it's private area...

What do you guys think? Male or Female. Click on picture to expand.

well bro... when it comes to venting that would be up to you.... as a owner to expierience their personality traits... it does seem in may be a female, by the description / personality of what you are saying...
as far as nuchal humps... i do believe all cichlids and new age cichlids/cichla, have them male and female... from reading all these spawns... females only get them when they are ready... and then slowly disapears.... but not really sure as i have not yet expieienced this..... but other breeders should chime in here....

i just wanted to say thats a very nice look'n MONOC, & WAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSAAAAAAAAAAA UPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!:D

Yea, I thought of just catching it and venting but catching a Pbass in a 8 ft x 4 ft tank is not easy =-( . I will just base it on observation and behavior.

I showed a picture of a FOGO in front of my tank and asked my babies to copy it as best it can... my little Mono was trying it's best...LOL

Based purely off the dropped tube, I'd say male. Notice how it points toward the rear and comes to a distinct point. A female's tube will point straight down and be blunt tipped.

I don't know about Cichla(they may be different), but that sounds like typical male Neotropical cichlid behavior; protect and preserve a breeding site, all the while watching for receptive females.
