I have the opportunity to get 5 wild caught peruvian angels. I have never kept these, nor know much about them. Any info would be great. Key things I need to know is for anyone that has kept them, and particularly anyone that has breed both these and scalares. Are these as aggressive as scalares during breeding? What are their max sizes? Is breeding any different from that of p. scalare?

I would be glad to hear updates and see photos from you about them.:) This is so interesting.:)

Try to look into this forum for more information regarding Peruvian angels.:) Excellent forum when you want to ask different species of angelfish.

Already been to all the sites, just checking for anyone with experience. I have plenty of experience in breeding the various strains of p. scalare, but I have no experience with any peruvians, and I am uncertain still if they are peruvians altums, or peruvian scalares.

I have had a group in the past.

Very sensitive to nitrates, clean water is essential. They show much more aggression to others in the same group than domesticated ones, seems they establish a hierachy. Growth rate is very slow surprisingly.

I started out with 5 in a 80 gal with some discus. The tank was under the care of a friend for the summer with me visiting about once a week to service the tank (maybe like once every week and a half). The hot climate did make water parameters foul up faster. I believe temperatures were around the higher 80s. I recommend around 82. They were doing fine until i lost 2 when i didnt return for about 2 weeks. At the time, the only filter on there was a xp3. They also seem to really enjoy high oxygen levels.

For about 4 months they hardly grew in size. 2 of them started to get thin, and i didnt know what to attribute it to since i treated for parasites in the past. I quarantined them and medicated but coudent alleviate the problem and they wasted away in a matter of a month.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask!

they're scalares. they're called peruvian altums because they have the pre-dorsal notch like altums.

I had good luck keeping mine alive - didn't loose any out of six, but I couldn't get them to pair up within themselves, or with other 'regular' scalares at all. other people have reported getting them to spawn.
