Still looking for suggestions for a pet for my brother and I for our apartment. He's very against anything that isn't the traditional mammal (ie fuzzy, personable, not scaled, etc.). No dogs, neither of us is particularly a cat person. So basically looking for something that is not too large, personable, independent enough to survive a day or so entertaining itself, not noisy or particularly smelly...I'm thinking some kind of small bird species would be best but not sure which to go with, open to suggestions. Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

ferrets and the sort of the like would prob best fit your description of what your looking for.
ppl say they smell but with the proper care and maintenance they dont smell, also they have
quite the character from the many ive seen & owned... a breaded dragon is also cool if you
wanna take reptiles into consideration pretty sure your bro would take a liking to it. i dont
know anyone that didn fall in love with my hypo pastel x red BD.

Sugar Gliders, chinchilla, hedgehog all make good pets and are personable Ive only had a Chinchilla and I still do have him I've also had ferrets those take a lot of time though unless you don't mind the smell you'd have to clean there cage at least twice a week and give it a bath every week and clip there nails once every 2 weeks or it will start smelling bad but they are pretty cool if you take care of them but Chinchillas are a lot better in my experiences don't smell bad make a mess here and there...next for me is a sugar glider though those look like they'd be fun to keep and let glide around your house

You, sir, need rats.
  • not at all smelly if you are reasonably diligent about cleaning; the new odor-reducing substrates help too
  • very personable if you get them young and handle them frequently
  • virtually silent (all birds are noisy, just give up on a quiet bird before you go any further)
  • don't take up a lot of room
  • can (should) be kept in small groups, so you can each have one
  • smart. trainable

x2.

I have a small group that I keep for breeding snake food, and the male is the nicest rodent that I've ever handled; he likes to be held and scratched behind his ears. The smell is not bad so long as you remove their waste ASAP, and do weekly bedding changes; it also will help if you get two females or a male & a female rather than two males since they'll produce much more of their scent that they use to mark their territory if you get two males.

ok seriuosly you need a mini pig. ours is awesome! she doesnt smell is litter box and outside potty trianed comes to her name doesnt chew or bark and will only get to be about 30 lbs.
awesome pets man! no joke.
and they really dont stink at all. even her litter box doesnt smell bad. cat box is way worse.

Showed all of these suggestions to my brother, his only response was "dog or nothing". He's extremely closed minded as to what qualifies as an acceptable pet...
