pet owner face charges ...

Britain is the biggest police state on earth. Cant even step outside your house without being on at least 6 different cameras, and now the police are setting up sting operations over goldfish. Honestly I'm not surprised.

Nice jewelry, grandma.

isnt this tha same forum that cries foul when the law doesnt do enough to protect fish, all you here is moaning about how the animal police go out of their way for fluffies but they dont give a damn about fish. yet now that a law designed to protect animals, no matter how flawed that law may be, is executed everyone seems to be moaning that its a bit much.

what do you prefer, sales to supervised children under 16 or kids going in with their pocket money and buying a fish but no equipment or even worse a bowl??

they have sting operations to catch people selling puppies/cats/rodents illegally so why not fish. this law is designed to protect all animals being sold in pet stores, this time they planned to catch a shop selling fish illegally.
But it just doesn't make sense to waste all of these resources over a goldfish that can't cost more than £2. Now the government has to waste time and money to put her on trial, to give her the bracelet/anklet, and then to monitor it.

i see your point and it is a lot of money and time but you cant not prosecute because the item was only £2.
she broke the law, no matter how flawed or stupid that law may seem she still broke it. resources dont come into consideration with regards to prosecution, only evidence.

regardless of how the media blow this up to make her sound like a victim she still broke the law and needed to be punished. the media try to make her out like a victim who got done over when in fact she knows she is supposed to ID anyone who looks like they could possibly be under 25 (its a way of detecting minors apparently).

she is using the poor little old lady act to try and muster sympathy so people miss the point of why she has some new bling.

I'm not too sure how the law in the UK works, but over here, if it was an item like this, the police would have offered her a deal to help them find more people who are doing worse things.

occasionally they like to make an example of people with regards to various laws so they punish them as hard as possible. this is probably one of those cases.

In principle your right she was breaking the law but you should match the punishment to the crime. Making her wear an ankle bracelet for two months is excessive.

Sting operation for goldfish.... Jesus of all the things I should have been tagged for growing up and Grandma sells a goldfish to an under cover....

Haha exactly. This is not even a drop in the bucket compared to what an average person does everyday. Hell not even drunk driving gets this strict of a sentance.

Sure, some people try to get more protection for fish. Does that mean that I shouldn't say I think this is unfair? Complaining is a way to try to attain change, if not the most effecient one.

And I would prefer "kids going in with their pocket money and buying a fish but no equipment or even worse a bowl". This is how I got my first fish, in fact my first several. Sure, it isn't fair to the fish, but this is the first (misguided) step for many to become a fishkeeper.
