  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
all right shark..i'll go ask my fly fishing tutor!

All gamefish in CA require a permit to be kept.

Rainbow Trout need high oxygen levels, so you would need very well circulated water. But it's possible, I've seen a large pond with many many rainbow trout in it.

thanks for the info ewurm nabbig!
how would I circulate water though? like a powerhead?

Please clarify exactly what you are asking as this is getting confused...
Two questions....

1. Do you plan on keeping these fish in a tank or in a pond ?...(If either what size?)

2. How are you thinking of obtaining the species ?

In a pond..was thinking the big tank but didn't know about temperature and oxygen..
would probably be a pool converted into a pond..I was thinking a native pond with like bass and sunfish but now I don't know if the other fish can handle the water that the trout must be in..

I'll probably net some adults, or try to buy minnows from a hatchery. I'll look into the DFG on the laws..

No. It's illegal to net Rainbow Trout, or any other gamefish for that manner.

Look at it this way...it requires a 1hp pump to filter the average sized pool...you'll need at least 5 times that to have enough of a water turn over...It costs about 45.00 to 60.00 per month extra just to run the original pool filter pump...See where I'm going with this? To run a chiller that size...(personally I'd build one out of a used chest freezer and 1000 feet of tubing.) is going to run about half your pump electricty costs...so we're at something like 260.00 per month just to run the pond and we havn't talked about filtration yet.

oh god..let's not get into that then..
trout is off my future list..

thanks for the info guys
