PET rats... any keep these guys as "pets" and not just feeders?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I also highly recommend getting another of the same sex as rats are very social and need to be busy during the day

I think they look like great pets, I'd love to own one. Unfortunately my mother is phobic, and I own snakes, so I'd be more concerned that the scent would lead to increased aggression from them. Has anyone noticed this effect?

We have kept rats for years. We love them! They are very easily tamed and I have never been bitten by a rat. Ever. Maybe a little play nibble but never anything that would even leave a mark.

I would honestly keep him in that cage. My two rats LOVE to climb the cage, even on top. He will love the tallness of it, with two you might need a bigger cage, but see how it works out.

Also like someone else said, I'd get two. I have two sisters, they live perfectly together. Their always sleeping on each other.

I agree they do like to climb and the do enjoy the company of another rat. Be sure you get same sex cuz they will multiply like...rats lol.

i also have two pet rats. brothers oliver and owen. they always beg to be let out and want me to play with them. its best to use the natural paper like bedding they sell at pet stores because the wood shaving stuff is really bad on their respiratory system. and also the bedding doesnt smell up your house. it absorbs the odors. they LOVE goldfish crackers. lol but they are great pets.

I could never feed my snake a rat. Maybe a mouse, but rats are just so damn cool.

Rats are the most intelligent, inquisitive, friendly small animal ive ever kept-really good pets.Mine (Gone now) turned up in the middle of a sack of frozen feeder rats,he had been gassed, and thrown in a freezer for 3 days! I called him Lucky,he lived for 2 years. We dont tend to feed live in the uk,and i certainly couldnt now, they are really smart animals.
