Petco Aquatics Makeover

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
We are setting up a 120 reef show tank we also just got a 70 gal coral frag tank as well. I took the old 75 gal coral/live rock tank and converted it to a goldfish tank. The goldfish are no longer in the system with the tropicals which has made more room for cichlids and they will now be in an unheated tank with a chiller for the summer months. We also have now a forty gal live rock tank added. Not including our display tank we have added 120gal of for sale fish space. As far as the african show tank I was planning the black sand and rock (great minds think alike) but it will be a for sale/show tank. I will be striping the silicone and pulling the dividers in our small tanks to make one long tank. I am doing the best I can here petco is making an honest effort to be a top fish store and I am giving it my best. If you just want to rip on petco go start your own thread but to those who have given advice thanks and keep it comming.

I know that its not really fish, but when you see them, you see them over by the fish ...... axolotls, newts.... idk how it is up there but i literally went to about 12 pet stores down here and i could not find ANY! it might be a nice little "oddity" to carry and it doesn't take up much space at all. also, I think you should sell pistol shrimp! those things are very underrated and I would think you could get a decent price for them

Great now petco is going to be selling red tail cats and such.. Even if you are very knowledgable in all the fish you will sell, there are only 2 of you, and preventing someone from coming in and saying they have a 300 just to get a cool fish for their 29 is going to happen a lot, it is still petco. For the most part, the majority of monster fish hobbyists stick to lfs' over chain stores, and vice versa.

Good luck to you though, sounds like a cool step for you, and I hope all goes well for you and the fish.

I hate to put it this way, But I manage the fish dept. of a Pet Supplies Plus. As long as I carry the standard mollys, platys, and swords, I can special order any fish I wish to have. This includes aro's, rays, larger knives, RTC, TSN, and things in that nature. Heres what usually happens, Uneducated people buy these large large fish and put them in thier 29g and kill them, then I get the dead fish back a week later. I've been running this store for 3 years now and have seen it all to many times. Alot of people arnt willing to listin to what you have to say if it will prevent them from getting a fish they want. Another one I have is people saying they will get a bigger tank for it when it comes time. So its great you can start ordering real fish, but its also going to be killing alot more large fish. And comming from a corperate store, you know you can't refuse sales.

:::EDIT::: I just realized I pretty much just repeated the guy above me. Guess I shoulda read more then the first few posts.

I can refuse any sale if I feel it will not go to a good home! Try reeding the posts. BTW it was a lfs that told me the silver aro I was looking at was asian and that their was no such thing as an aro from South America, another lfs tried to sell me a south american gar I asked if it was a true gar and he said yes. You can get outstanding people working at big chains and lfs and as we have both proven you can get morons at both too!

no doubt morons seem to live in every environment

good job on getting the credo to do this

count me as subscribed interested to see what you do with this, carte blanche is a good thing when exercised properly.

kudos on the freedom granted you

I'm STILL curious though, if any of the Petcos in MY area will become a part of this program. Do you at least have a list of cities for these 30 or so stores that are going through this change as well? Albeit , none of the other 30 Aquatics Managers from the other stores have come on here yet, and also expressed their interest for info as you have, but I'm guessing that there's at least 29 other stores scattered throughout the country that could also use this advice, and knowledge too., right? Any info on whether we can expect a store in our area to be a part of this program would be GREATLY APPRECIATED... Thanks again.

Also, do you plan on stocking Wild Species of Bettas, (which can subsequently be housed communally) or are you guys content with just killing thousands of Splendens by putting them into 5 oz. cups? I've NEVER understood this??? I would absolutly LOVE nothing more than to be able to get a Macrostoma pair and not have to pay nearly $100 just for shipping and "Trans shipping" fees. Again, the very best of luck to you.

Ben.
