Petco Aquatics Makeover

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
still concerned. chain stores always have cards up with info that isnt all that great and get many less experienced people who may buy a more rare fish and not know what they are getting into. but a good selection would be nice overall as petcos are common and can be found in most areas. i gotta drive a lil to get to the lfs.

how about you carry tanks big enough for the fish in store?

Petsmart (I can't remember a petco near here except the one in Chatt) only carries up to 125gals, and sells pacus and ID sharks. You think if you sold someone a huge fish you'd want them to be able to buy 100% of the setup for that fish at the same location, esp. the pricey monster tanks.

my LFS doesnt even sell tanks bigger then 200g cause they cant get them inside the store,

still waiting for the list of other petcos btw :P

the petco up in totawa nj, used to carry larger tanks for good prices, now they won't carry anything above a 55g. Bring back the big tanks.

Not sure why everyone is so uppity about large chain stores, they have there good points, like being able to sell items cheaper because they can buy in larger bulk.

As far as not having knowledgeable sales attendants, I can tell you that I've heard alot of misnformation from reputable specialty fish stores as well. I think its more the owners responsiblity to their research first before buying a pet. Sales is telling you what you want to hear, i.e. you should impulsively spend your money on this.

I bought my 72g bowfront from Petco for a great price, and some of the tanks, when on sale, were a steal (kicking myself for not picking up more when they were in stock). I also recently bought a fluval 305 for the best price I've ever seen on a brand new one.

I would have to say if you dont have anything good to say then dont say anything

Regarding the big tanks here is an avenue you might with to follow. Just as you can have people special order in the big fish, see if you can get permission for them to special order big tanks.

That is what I do with the people who have begun to talk to me about big tanks. I take the deposit from them and then make arrangements to have the tank delivered to them.

I for one say good job on what you are doing and try not to listen to the naysayers.

I have seen shoddiness in all spectrums of the stores here and am hoping that when I open my shop up next spring that I can be a solution to that.

I really like what's being said here, if one insists on carrying fish that get extra large at least carry tanks that can accommodate them for a while. It’d be awful hard to tell someone you can’t sell them a fish due to the size of their tank when you don’t offer that tank yourself, hypocrisy would definitely undermine the cause.

I've purchased a lemon Oscar from this guy, him and his partner we're there and both we're very knowledgeable about the fish. I approve these guys and will be visiting there store regularly. They asked me about the tank it would be going in, what's in it, etc... They know what they are doing, so lay off this guy support fellow MFKers or shut up

hear hear:headbang2

oh I forgot he gave me advice on the pike I also purchased from him, this is my firsts pike. The guy I originally asked about the pike was the saltwater guy and he immediately told me to talk to the fresh guy, so they have no shame when it comes to being ignorant, but I'm telling you these guys are not.

Bottom Line: If you can provide me a top quality fish for a better price than the next guy..I am a customer. I don't need the person selling me the fish to be a fish expert because I do all my research before I buy...I'll repeat...do your research before you buy...do your research before you buy...
