i believe that causing a little rucus for your cause is not a problem.. and really think about it, i would fight to have petco or petsmart lose all of their sales! if tremendous companies like that were not around the little guys(LFS) would being making a better living doing something that they love. the advice would be good quality, and there would be more happy healthier fish around. not to mention ALOT more people out there would be more well informed about keeping fish.

seriously quit makin the assumption that petsmarts and chains are bad
around here i see more education in a chain lfs than a reg lfs
how would like someone to come into your store and steal your sales? hmm
and i only know of one small lfs within 1-2hr drive from where i am
and why do you think that a small lfs would automatically make them have healthier fish and more educated employees? think before you speak. your whole position on this is entirely based on assumptions
learn the whole truth and every corner and angle of viewing then you may write about petcos

#1) i do not assume. you and i both live in a country that has gone halfway to ***** because of big companies and corporations, petco and petsmart both being one of those.

#2) around here LFS are conformed of people who are just as addicted to keeping fish and other creatures as both you and i are. they share the same passion.

#3) i did not steal any sales, i told the customer to look into the situation through his own research. i did not tell him to not buy goldfish from petco.

#4) really? because i have 3 within a 20 minute drive from my house. all three struggling because of big corporations, which might i add again destroyed this country.

#5) once again... i have never personally delt with an employee at a local fish store by me that wasn't some sort of an aquarium and fish keeping cyclopedia.

#6) once again.. again.. i do not assume.

#7) you must have some type of blurred vision going on, because i am not your kid man!! i do not need your permission to speak or when to speak.

Do you really think any pacu dies from eating goldfish? I see a ton of adults 12-18" at work that the previous owners thought were piranhas and only fed them fish. These fish were nowhere near half grown yet and already too big for any tank they would possibly end up in. It is likely when the person insisted on buying 12" adults for his "monsterous" 55 gallon tank, the problem is size rather than diet.

Working at a LFS, I learned VERY few customers are interested in fish keeping. It is like pulling teeth trying to explain how alligator gars and RTCs will outgrow 55 gallon tanks. When I explain to customers how angelfish are not a 1 1/2 gallon corner tank fish they just shrug it off because they know what they are doing.

Now I got to the point where I pay attention to details from what the customer says and body language to try to get an idea on how far I will explain things to them. If a customer comes in wanting an "algae fish" and show them the selection of small pleco sp., they would rather save $2.51 and get the one that you told them grows to two feet.

Usually if the customer cares enough, he/she will actually look up the fish themselves or ASK an employee. I am sure that if he asked the employee ahead of time, the employee would have told him the proper foods. When a customer comes in acting like a know-it-all who says they need 100 more feeders for their pacu, you are most likely wasting your breath trying to explain dietary needs of different fish to somebody who wanted a fish because it looked like a piranha.

the main aquatics guy told me the yellow tangs have hith and hlle because they are tank bred, so because they are eating pellets, it brings out their color and lateral line, it also makes holes in their head, they also only need a 10 gallon, and dont need veggies in their diet

this is the guy with a degree in marine biology

i wouldnt be surprised if it was from itt tech

Wow, what do I think about the OP interrupting like that? Absolutely absurd, overbearing and obsessive. I understand that people are entitled to their own opinions, but you don't just interrupt someone while they are working. MFK sort of reminds of a extremist group of fish nazi's. Listen, there is a proper way to take care of a fish, you may think your way is right, that person may believe his way is right. Either way, for you to interrupt a conversation takes pure balls, and ignorance.

The average LFS is a cash-flow operation with little reserves. LFS's are struggling in this economy. They will do whatever they can to make a sale. LFS's sell feeder fish, just like Petco. I've had discussions with LFS's about the hazards of feeding feeders. They all sell feeders. Do not put LFS's on a pedestal. They commit the same crimes against fish that the chains do, maybe not as much.

Until one of them starts making a lot of money then opens another store. Then another, and another and etc. Then eventually becomes the petsmart of fishes.

A lot of people at petsmart and petco know what they are doing. Once in a while they hire somebody that is a complete idiot and they don't work there very long. I can't even count how many times an employee gave a customer great advice but theres always those ignorant people who never listen and always think their way is right.

Not to pick on the OP, but I was checking your profile to see how old you were. I think a lot of the younger generation is very inconsiderate (I say that at 24 yrs old). Not everyone knows everything, just like your profile says you're putting a Rena xp5 rated at 495gph on your 125g. Not everyone knows everything and you need not be so critical. I'm not real sure why it bugs me that you were rude, other than the fact that the majority of America is "right", then likes to post about it on Facebook.
