PETCO.. it's where the pets go

The closest Petco to me usually lacks in variety and has at least one dead fish per system, iffy looking fish. The other Petco near me absolutely fails and their fish are always lethargic, loaded with ich or eye infections, dead fish all over the place. The closest Petsmart (too far from me) has a good selection, active fish, and rarely any dead. They are usually pretty overstocked though (3-4" pacu in a 4" wide divided area). I prefer LFS in general.

The Petco by me only has feeder goldies. The Petsmart here does have a great selection of some great looking fish. I've talked to the woman working there and she really does care for the fish!

Around here there is no Petco but there is a Petsmart. At the local Petsmart the water always looks perfect as do the fish. Every once in a while there will be some cichlids that look pretty beat up, but that is the the way they come in on the shipments. Also the employees are pretty well rounded when it comes to fish knowledge, however the locally owned pet store in town is much more knowledgeable.

It varies widely from store to store. Some are like heaven some are more like walking through a hospice, a really bad hospice.
I so agree, it varies from store to store. I went to one where the fish are in great condition then I went to another one that I swore I would have a heart attack from seeing all the fish with ick, velvet and oscars with hole in the head. And if that isn't bad enough every other tank had a dead fish being eaten by its tank mates!

Pet co, petsmart and walmart all suck in south carolina. Not to many good pet stores around here. I had to go too north carolina to get the fish I wanted
