what store do you like. ive been to both and it never seems like they know what their talkin about. have you seen the tags they put out about the fish. max size, diet, lifespan, etc?? do you believe any of those. just bugs me so i thought i would vent and see what everybody else thinks

My issues with these types of stores, there is not enough focus to provide proper and addequite education on the fish and their care. I would more likely go to a specialty shop where they only sell fish and pick up there. The others are for when you can't get anything else.

Petsmart seems to have a little better selection, and better prices on dry goods.

Most of the people who work in the fish department in these stores don't know much about fish. Around here, they are usually 15-16 year olds just wanting some bucks.

I received some quite bad advice when I was new to the hobby and I picked Petsmart to get me started. I bought a 28 gallon tank. They told me I could put water in it and get everything going that night, then the next day, I could fill it with fish. Well, I did what they said, and, of course, most of those fish died.

I did buy an Oscar at Petsmart the other night, and the girl made sure that I had a large enough tank for him, so I appreciated that.

lol. i do agree that the advise is bad, otherwise i wouldnt have started this thread lol. im glad she asked you about your tank before she sold it to you, that is a little bit more professional.

keep the posts coming. its interesting to hear everybodys bad and good outcomes at these stores.

P.S. i do agree that specialty stores are better and i hate seeing these corporations going up with the only goal is to achieve 1 million dollars at the end. its upsetting

well i go to petco only for feeders and food. then i go to this place call aquarium adventures for fish (have a way better selection, aros and rays and such, but its pretty far so i only go for fish, not food). in my experiences people at petco have had more knowledge there used to be a guy at petco that got fired cause he refused sales to people whoms tanks where not big enough to keep the fish they wanted. but then i do notice petsmart has a better selection, i applied to work at petsmark (maybe ill share some knowledge with other employees).

thats good to hear. if these companies are going to take over, id rather people who know their stuff, like you, work there.

there's a guy with a mustache that works at the petco in henrietta, ny that really knows his fish and what he's talking about, good on fish recommendations and compatibility while taking tank size into consideration, i was pleasantly surprised

why go to petco or petsmart for food and feeders. Most petstores only survive on their dry goods. They have that great selection at your local stores to get in as a customer... Shops hope that you will come shop for your food and such and will find something else that you want... if you go to shops for your fish go there for your food, otherwise they may not be there next time you are bored with box store fish... not hating, just sharing the facts...
