petco or petsmart? maybe neither!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I go for neither because of lack of knowledge.

I have two stories. 1 for each.
So when I went to buy my senegal bichir at petsmart and when I asked the girl if they eat flakes and she said "yes". And in the back of my mind I was think "what the **** is she talkin about.

The next one is when I got my oscar and zebra danios as treats. Went up to buy them and the guy that sold them to me didn't even ask what size tank I have or ask me if they are going in the same tank. Dumb***

ive heard of petland from other websites. apperently their pretty good, according to word of mouth lol.l i really appreciate everybodys input. keep it coming. i got some really bad experiences throught petco, but the one thing that really upsets me about my local petco is that when you walk in there, you stand there for about 20 minutes before one employee aproaches you. kind of upsetting sometimes. i do understand that sometimes people like to look first and then ask later, but for some reason im always in their and nobody ask's if i need help. again just venting lol!!!

Petsmart seems to have a little better selection, and better prices on dry goods.

Most of the people who work in the fish department in these stores don't know much about fish. Around here, they are usually 15-16 year olds just wanting some bucks.

I received some quite bad advice when I was new to the hobby and I picked Petsmart to get me started. I bought a 28 gallon tank. They told me I could put water in it and get everything going that night, then the next day, I could fill it with fish. Well, I did what they said, and, of course, most of those fish died.

I did buy an Oscar at Petsmart the other night, and the girl made sure that I had a large enough tank for him, so I appreciated that.
That was nice of her.

Petland is not bad... they could take care of their fish better, but the specialists are a bit smarter. There is a lot to desire for in their herptile keeping though.

I go to my LFS and Home Depot, Canadian Superstore, Totem and Lowe's for all my critter goods.

i really only go to petsmart for expensive equipment (new tanks, filters, heaters, light fixtures, stands, canopies, etc) cause of price matching and the fact that chain stores can charge less cause of bulk.
i go to aquarium adventure or petland (the ones by me is really nice and if you can get the one of the two guys that care, it's really good for info too) for all freshwater fish.
i used to go to coral paradise for SW but they closed and now i go to ocean's floor.
i went into a petco once and was horrified, never went in again.

My senegal actually did eat flakes. Not regularly but I did see him snatch a couple.

I go to Petsmart for food/equipment, it really is hard to beat the price-matching.

Where I live Petco is the worst... I don't even bother wasting my time there or at Petsmart.

Petland is the best one that is close to me. Most of the time at least... they have one person working there that irritates the hell out of me. Last time I was at the store she told a customer "yeah you could put two Bala Sharks in a 10 gallon".

But I go over to VA Beach to a place called Animal Jungle where they have EVERYTHING.... Or at least it seems like it. Very knowledgeable staff and a really great pleco selection. I'm still not sure if thats part of a chain of stores or not... Has anyone else ever heard of it?
