buddy, mine grew from 2" to 5" in under 4 months, and grew to the size of a piece of notebook paper in about 8 months. they grow insanely fast for a community fish. youll need to upgrade in about 6 months or less to at least a 30-45g

why are there two of these threads?
I would say thank you to the employee.
I don't really know anyone that cycles a tank with fish anymore.
Why not just use mulm from someone's tank and use pure ammonia until it is ready or stability (never tried it, but heard good things about it)

You need patience in the fish keeping hobby. Sometimes that is hard, I know.

I had the same question.

I used stability in 3 of my cycled tanks (I used the cycled directions) as I was told it's good to keep your tanks in check.

All my params have been prefect for a year... it was a 30, 90, and 125.

The 30 gallon had to be water changed 5 times in one day, and I had to drain my 125 completely after having to move all of it's inhabitants because the ammonia went through the roof and burned all my fish, literally overnight. Even a 90% water change didn't change the ammonia after 24 hours. My municipal water doesn't have ammonia in it.

I'm still dealing with my 90 recycling.

I will never use Stability again!

Did you tell him that you cycled your tank for a month? a month is good enough.

I don't really get the fuss about this.

The employee was trying to save the fish.
Your tank may or may not be set up.
Bring a water sample to have it tested and if there are 0ppm of ammonia, 0ppm of nitrite and some nitrates (less than 20ppm), then you know you can get another fish.
If you have any nitrite or ammonia or nitrates higher than 20ppm, hold off for a bit until your tank is ready.
If your nitrates are higher than 20ppm, do a water change and check it later on.
If you have any ammonia or nitrite, then your tank is not setup yet (at least in my mind)

I wish I had a pet store like that when I was just starting up. Heck, when I was starting, pet stores were letting me buy whatever I want without asking any questions. ID sharks for 15 gallon tanks, buying a tank and getting fish for it on the same day, it was terrible.
I was happy about it back then, but to think now what I was doing to the fish is just disgusting.

I agree with alot ofg people on here. The pet stor employees are there to keep at least some of the idiots from buying all the supplies and fish on the same day. More advanced aquarists just tell them what they want to hear and go about business. Don't rag to hard on the poor guys/gals that are eaking a few dollars out of the big box fish stores. Not many who really care about the trade will work there!
