Support your LFS if you can or they to will close up and the only option will be online.

Actually the only option won't be online, there will still be thousands of LFS to shop at, but most of them will be the massive BIG box chain stores, such as Petco, Petsmart, etc, which now also all have an online presence. With over 3 billion in sales in 2013 they may eventually catch up to Petsmart that recorded almost 6 billion in sales in 2013.

And with over 1,000 retail outlets Petco's buying power will far exceed Drs. F&S, so one may actually see a better selection of goods, at lower prices. There just might be a happy ending in all of this as far as prices go, stay tuned.

I have bought glass tops from doctors foster and smith and they came nicely packed and arrived on time for good price, matter a fact I priced them out at various places, I am just hopping they make them exclusive to the pet store and their online activities, and offer deals on both websites to keep people with jobs... I made a logo for doctor foster and smith:ROFL:Petco.JPG

I used to go to Pauline at Atlantis in South Portland for all of my saltwater stuff back in the day.

She's been gone for a couple of years.

I've heard Black Shark was closing. Yeah, not much over your way. PetCo in Auburn is about the closest. If you get down towards Portland, check out Easy Aquariums in Gorham. Nice crew there and good selection.

Thats sad to hear. Her prices were high but she had a really nice reef tank that I loved.

I used to live in Gorham, is easy aquariums new?

I've ordered from foster and smith a couple times.

Nothing spectacular - prices were ok, shipping was OK, selection was mediocre. Nothing really to keep me coming back

The only thing that stood out for me was their site was set up nicely and was full of very detailed product information which I liked. I'd be lying if I didnt tell you ive ordered stuff on ebay/amazon and used the DFS website for reference.

I try not to shop at petsmart or petco. I try to do 90% of my dealings locally at my locally owned fish store. Their prices are ALWAYS cheaper than the corporate stores. They are usually on par with amazon prices if not less. They can order almost anything I want with < 1 week turnaround and mo shipping. Good people, I'd much rather give them my money.

He's been there for about 2 years, in the Gorham Industrial Park. Moving soon just down the road where a furniture store used to be.

Cool, I must have left town just before he opened. Used to coach at USM back in the day.

There are a lot of reasons why one company purchases another. Increasing profits by reducing competition is one of the least common reasons. Generally speaking, businesses acquiring other businesses within the same industry but not performing the same function is a healthy function in any industry that is undergoing consolidation. If the effect of this were to inhibit competition, Petsmart, NLS, and other companies would be encouraged and within their rights to file anti trust complaints to the DoJ.

The online retailing supply side has not been reduced in magnitude therefore there is no economic reason for prices to rise. Similarly, the brick and mortar retail supply side has not been reduced in magnitude therefore there is no economic reason for prices to rise.

What has happened at least along one line of reasoning is that Petco has obtained more purchasing power vis a vis the food, equipment, etc suppliers and may be able to reduce inventories, reduce the cost of goods sold, headcount, etc. to produce more profits and/or to reduce prices to consumers. Petco also might simply have wanted a significant increase in the on-line market and decided that this was a better alternative than building that structure from scratch.

Improving the efficiency of a fragmented industry via consolidation without achieving monopoly power does not normally lead to higher prices.
