petsmart ftw. in my area the only difference is that petco carries SW fish. but i still prefer my local petsmart, but my lfs would be my first choice.

I like both places but would do my best to avoid at all cost's buying from either GO www.liveaquaria.com
totally depends on the store staff. i've had bad and great experiences at a variety of stores. mostly, the Petco stores out here are horrible... some of the Petsmarts are good.

petsmart. petco are pathetic. the fish they carry are so damn tiny i cant even tell what im looking at. petsmart, as bad as it is, is worlds ahead of petco
i was just in both today. my local petco has healtheir fish, but they have a limited supply. they carry the typical livebearers, i.e. guppies, swordtails, mollies and a some tetras and a few other common egglayers. the water is clearer and the fish are much healthier. petsmart has a larger variety and they often have better pricing. the problem with petsmart is that you have to closely examine their fish for disease and just overall health.
I find petsmart better, since they carry more variety in fish, and are generally cheaper. However, I prefer the Pet Supermarket chain as much better than either IMO when it comes to fish selection, although it depends on the employees in the individual store that orders more interesting fish
