I went to my local Petco today and I saw an employee pouring
Rust-O-Leum brand Paint Thinner into a bucket, I went to luck into the bucket to see what was going on and I saw about 50-70 small convicts in there. I asked what they were doing and the guy told me that they were overstocked on convicts so this is how they got rid of them painlessly, I asked if I could just take them becasue what he was doing is ridiculous and he said he wasnt aloud to, I went and looked again about 20 minutes later and they were still alive but most were swimming upside down. Is that not illegal????

i doubt it is illegal...it will only be illegal if you release them into freshwater creeks and lakes.

I don't think there is such law against inhumane methods employed to euthanize a fish. That's really awful. I think you should talk to the Petco manager at least and explain to him well to try much more humane methods. The thinner is toxic and will not kill the fish instantly especially if diluted in water.

Im generally not the type of person to get all bent about much. Heck Im relaxed. Not the fighting type.

But for a company to have an employee out in the middle of the store or fish section doing this??? I would be PISSED! I would insist on the manager! I would tear him a new one for sure.

Convicts are a very common breed and sometimes they get "over stocked" but to just kill them??? Come on.. Buy one get one free. Or call a REAL pet store and ask if they would be willing to take them. God anything!

Go back and punch someone.

There always seems to be Petco/Petsmart/Walmart threads about inhuman activity, sick fish, or inexperienced hobbyists/employees. It's terrible, but that's how things will always be.
What Petco in NJ was this?

Agreed, this is pathetic. What'll it be next, the firing squad for the latest litter of puppies? I can't believe this is their solution to being "overstocked."

They should at least try giving them away for free to the customers,..most of them may want to take them home! :screwy:

Should have a petco/petsmart/walmart complain section :)

But yeah, Agreed. Very stupid

Let's call it the "Piss and Moan" forum. It will do no good- odds of employees of the chain stores reading it are slim. Odds of someone high up enough in the company reading it are even slimmer. Slimmer yet are the odds of that individual being prompted into action.

If you don't like it, take it up with individual store managers.
