Will a small amount of petroleum jelly(vaseline) harm fish? By small amount I mean like maybe a gram of it.

Thanks.

What we all really want to know is probably... Why?

Are you using it to lube some plumbing fittings? If so not a good choice for your fish. The hardware store carries a special type that should be more safe.

Well whats the special stuff called? I would like to know....

what are you trying to do with it?

i use it to get better seals on worn out gaskets on canisters and on the skimmer for the pond.. this is not the best idea as im sure somehow its not good for the fish and i know its not good for the gaskets...

if this is what you are intending to do with it.. drfostersmith.com has some stuff that is made for this.. im sure there are other brands and places to get it..

I want to lubricate the impeller shaft on one of my power filters to see if it helps with the rattling/vibration thats going on with them.

what are your fishes? coz' i think that if you have expensive fish in there it is better off buying a new power head than risking your fishes death by trying something very risky.

Well knowone has given me a scientific reason why if would be harmfull. All you guys do is keep telling me not to do it.....

it doesn't matter how expensive my fish are, a life is a life and If I can save one, know matter what species it is, I will have done my job.

Well its made up hydrocarbons, I knew that, and so are fuels for cars. And I know gasoline kills other organisms. However it is water repelling. So doesn't this mean that if water can't penetrate it, it can't give off anything harmfull to the water ending up in the inhabitants?

I will tell you this is petroleum jelly in the wild? NO, is the answer use something natural. A lot of the products you see in stores are either proven not to be harmful or are very natural. Google natural lubricant then go from there if your looking for a cheap fix. Or buy a product made for fish.:headbang2

AS long as its pure it wont harm them but it would get atomized in the impeller cloud up your water and cause a scum and greasy glass

its been used before, so far no body has had loses including me. it was being used on equipment so the fish didnt ingest it
