I know I should not let it bother me cause whe they do ask they are only looking out for the fish but at times I do get annoyed-I'm like do you know who I am-everyone in this city comes to me for their tanks-and it bothers me cause some young kid will try to one up me-I guess I need to get my head out of the clouds-LOL!

One time I bought a Jag and the employee seemed apprehensive and started asking all types of questions-and I was patient for awhile when I finally had to put him in his place I didn't do it right away but if you folks notice that at PetSmart the Irridiscent Sharks are labeled at peaking at 8 inches-So a lady asked if she could have one for life in a 30 gallon-the guy said sure try 3-4 as a school-that is where I got him-I happened to have my laptop with me so I had the proof right there-I ended up staying at the store for two hours cause nobody wanted this guys help-ever since that he goes the other way!

In england we have pets at home and maidenhead aquatics are the 2 big chain stores, maidenhead is great and ive never been to a bad store but pets at home:yuck: the people know nothing when they ask you to fill out the form they are only familiar with the fish they sell and the common names so if you want to buy a goldfish to live with an oscar then they wont sell it to you but if you buy a goldfish to live with astronotus ocellatus then its fine cos they dont know what it is.

ha its too true lol ! im in the uk too!
sod pets at home it should be something like mc donalds do fish as all their employees are fed the same BS just to be able to sell fish !!
they dont care about them so of course they dont know anything about them !

well if they dont recognise what your saying to them and dont show a little respect because of it, then your well within your right to get wound up as its just plain rediculous that the spotty little weekend worker can tell someone with Years of fishkeeping experience what he can and cannot keep in their tank !! :screwy::screwy:
i know the feeling !:wall:

they are so stupid they sell the malawis as astd malawis and claim they are all aggresive and you have to explain to the employes that there is a massive selection of cichlids in lake malawi which alll have different temerment and its ridiculous to classify them all as the same fish.

Uhm, I'm pretty sure that if you don't like it, you wouldn't shop there. Especailly if the fish are "peppered with ich" like you say.

It's PetSmart policy to ask what they're buying for, and its better to get an idea of what customers are shopping for, rather than sell them an arrowana for a 10 gallon (for example), then having it die, then mad customers. Maybe the employee was new? Usually newbies learn what goes together, and until they're there for a while, they don't know what all goes together.

Just calm down. What if someone sold you a fish that would have killed all your other fish? You'd be here berating the store that didn't bother to ask.

Maybe he doesnt shop there? I certainly don't since I get into arguements with know it all staff. Since becoming more of a "pro keeper" I have noticed pets at home or petsmart in the USA/canada is catered towards mums and dads buying a goldfish for a kid, not my tastes - the filters they stock SUCK, yet they are always moaning about how important filtration is, they sell not one cannister filter. Mince!

i agree 100%, i work at deathco and don't like the company however i do like the fact that we have the power to refuse to sale to anyone whom we believe(with good reason, not just because we don't like the person) will not provide a proper home. almost every day i work there i get to deal with some idiot who wants to put incompatible fish together or fish into a tank that is far to small(an associate sold a guy a pair of 3~4" koi without asking anything about where they'd be kept or giving any information, he came back the next day to get a 2.5g bowfront for them) stop complaining because somebody didn't want to sell you a fish, if its that big a deal go to another store or come back later when you don't have fish in the truck and talk to them. just because your on a forum or know a bit about fish doesn't necessarily make you more knowledgeable than the person bagging your fish(training sucks but you sometimes find people with a lot of experience) you aren't exactly wearing a shirt with a list of your fish-keeping experiences and knowledge or have "certified fish expert" stamped on your forehead, for all we know you could be the idiot we get all the time who thinks his "huge" 40g tank is enough for a pair of oscars, a blood parrot and half a dozen africans and gets offended when i inform him that he can't keep as many fish in his tank as the picture on the box his tank came in.

i already said i have a 125 and i may only have a year of expierience but im not an idiot and dont claim to be a fish expert

they sell not one cannister filter. Mince!
agreed and if they care so much about the fish why do they sell fish tht will outgrow every tank they sell, also its ridiculous to catagorize fish into aggresive, semi aggresive and peaceful as according to them angelfish falls into the same catagory as a jd.

Another good point jack, nearly every fish they sell cannot be housed in ANY of their tanks on sale for life!

D'OH!:screwy:

it just seems silly to me that there is no one over the age of 19 working at the local pets at home shop over here ??
its like they are hiring kids for cheap labour ! but this is exactly what happens when you put a 16 to 19 yearold in a position of slight power ! they will use it and if you try and make a point to them they think that because they work there they are more knowlegable than yourself and cut you off completely rufusing to sell altogather !!

i agree steverothery the whole chain is geared towards parents buying the kids a pet but why advertise such a wide variety of exotic fish ??
its not like a 5yr old is going to care weather it gets a goldfish or a malawi cichlid ?
its just a pet fish to a child !!

it also amazes me the ammount of sick dying and dead fish that remain in the tanks of my local store ! it just seems like the employees cant be botherd
