PetsMart Cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have bought my jack dempsey, green terror, severum from petsmart actually. They are doing great, with no health issues. The one local place, that I do really like by me,is pet supply's plus. They have knowledgeable employees who actually own fishes themselves and maintain their tanks.

I buy from the LFS and the chains... Both do some things well, and other things less well.

Let's face it, the chains have brought prices down across the board, but their selection of fish is very poor. While the LFSs have a LOT more choice in what they carry, but I've been in more than a few of them were "greed" was the word of the day.

I love the LFS in my town, but the chain has a place as well.

As always, I suspect the answer lies somewhere in the middle.

Here's some pics of what i have bought over the years at petsmart/petco.

I have had awsome luck with the Jewel cichlids that I bought from Petsmart. I would guestimate that 90+ % of the fish that I have purchased from Petsmart(s) have survived the initial two week quaranteen, and the 10ish % that did not were replaced without so much as a question. Pretty awsome in my oppinion!

They will never have a nice KOK!!! Personally i only raise fish with strong genes and huge Nuchal Humps!!!! I like to breed them and know what I am going to get!!!

Dude, don't support either (petsmart or petco). The fish you are looking for is like, what, $2 extra at a LFS? The chains are the main reason you see the LFS's go out of business. They have crap fish, uneducated employees, they buy from animal factories, and spread inaccurate info. You are going to support that while the LFS starves? Your LFS (presumably) has employees that work there because they actually like fish, not because they need a part time job and bagging fish is easy. They would probably order anything you could possibly imagine (or at least try to) for you. If they don't have the RD you are looking for, ask. They will get it. My personal favorite is they are actually friendly. I am on a first name basis with most of the employees at most of the LFS's around me. Every time I walk into a chain store, there is a new rude employee there that has no interest in actually working.

This is our hobby. Support it. The fish business is very cut throat. Next time you are in a chain store, look around. If thats what you want for the future of our hobby, go ahead and save a buck. If not, throw the LFS guy some action.

Two bucks EXTRA sounds about right to me. When I first began fishkeeping around two years ago, and was trying to cycle a new tank, I went to a very wel renown LFS in the area and "bought" a couple of water test kits (A 5 in 1 and Ammonia strips). I went through what I believed was a successful cycle and went to the same LFS and bought some Rams for the tank. They all died overnight. I took the Rams back for an exchange, and the LFS did a water test with liquid regent test kit type. Ammonia was determined to be the cause of the death, hence no replacement or credit was issued.

At this point I decried, but I did test the water myself and it showed no ammonia. I was asked what kind of test kit that I was using and replied the paper strips. I was then told that they are garbage worthless inacurate B.S. and could not be trusted. Then I point the the B.S. that was hanging on the shelf behing the counter FOR SALE and replied, I sure do wish the YOU would NOT have STEARED me wrong and SOLD me this garbage.

Yeah, sure the LFS's are all looking out for the hobbiest and all chain petstores are just out to "mislead" hobiest for a quick buck!

This DID NOT cause me to boycott that store or other LFS's. I do accept that the paper strips are indeed way worse than worthless. I was WRONG for trusting ANY type of fish store personell before THOUROUGHLY researching for myself.

In short FOR NO REASON WILL I EVER TRUST a LFS employee anymore that I would a chain pet store employee. The onous is STILL directly on you either way.

As for "INQUIRING" about getting certain species in: I have asked every LFS that I have been to in this area about the possibility of getting any Bowfin in. Holy Crap dude! These are not even foriegn fish that require "Importing" of. With that said and well over a year passed, not one single LFS has brought one in for sale.

LMAO, It is horrible for a chain petstore to sell a red bellied Pacu, but cool as cucumbers for a LFS to sell a white sturgeon! WTF?

It looks like this is turning into yet another chain store bash. While I do agree with some of the faults of chain stores mentioned by other members, I just can't agree with insulting their employees or calling them names. I have on occassion ran into a few chain store employees that were pretty rude and uninformed, but in general the stores that I visit have very nice employees that know and respect me. They even ask me for advice on some things. Some times people just need employment. They may not have fish at home but they may have a spouse and children to support. If they are lucky enough to be hired by one of these chain stores, they have the right to take the job. They have to act and depend on the livestock information given to them by their employer. Many times that information is terribly inaccurate. But that failure lies on the employer. So to a lot of these people, this is just a job and they have to follow the guidelines given by the people who sign their checks if they want to keep their job. Not everyone is willing to lose their way of life to stand up for the tank requirements of a Pacu. Are a lot of the practices of these big stores wrong? Absolutely, yes! But not everyone with a fish tank considers the care of their fish as a hobby and passion like the members on this site. We value and enjoy our fish, their comforts, and their quality of life. That's the difference between a hobbyist and a person with an Oscar in a 20gal. tank. It's the responsibilty of the person buying the fish to provide proper care for their fish and to devote time into educating themselves on the things associated with keeping their fish. I support the small stores far more than I do the big chains. So I don't feel guilty for shopping at Petco, Petsmart, etc. I just think that sometimes on this site we get so wrapped up in the fish that we become numb and inconsiderate of the human aspect of our lives and hobby. Insulting employees and cursing them out shows more about the character of the customer than it does about the rude or uneducated employee.

Well, that's because Koks are associated with Flowerhorns, not common cichlids. You are right about genetics though, it plays a big role in the growth and overall appearance of your fish. The size of the Nauchal Humps of Red Devils and Midas are determined by several things; diet, temp., hierarchy, genetics are a few.
