It's not weird, we do it all the time with sexually dimorphic species like guppies, mollies, dwarf gouramis, congo tetras, haplochromine cichlids, etc. Stops people buying all the nice males and leaving us with a tank of ugly brown fish.

Just curious, why would you not buy primarily males then? Can you not do that with your supplier?

I don't think that is to much stock for a tank I'm on your side. The polys might have been picked on though they are generally big predatory peaceful fish. I don't ever see my poly chewing on another's fins or anything. That being said I would say that your 220 was probably more than large enough to accommodate all those fish with good husbandry, including the polys.

We do occasionally, such as with guppies. But mollies always come as a mixed gender bag. Congos, cichlids, gouramis typically do as well. The reason is the same, the fish farms don't want to waste half their stock because they happen to be female.

Aye. Plus it would be hassle for them to be constantly sorting through all the females to find just males.

A large portion of people want mixed genders in their tanks as well, so it works out. REQUIRING people to buy pairs though doesn't always fly, as some people just want to get a male for their already existing group and vise versa.

makes sense.

Yeah, but the problem is everyone who wants just the males always says they have tons of females lol. I'm happy to split the pairs up if people want extra females...

Where is your store location in ON?

Wow, you sure showed them! I support my LFS by buying from them, it's good you did too.
That sounds like a lot of fish to be adding all at once.

In your original post you said the above plus the 3 tinfoil barbs which is 12 fish. Like I said, it's just my opinion, but adding 12 fish at one time, including 2 cichlids and 5 plecos(poop machines in my experience) is alot. Not saying it can't be done, just that I wouldn't. Either way it's your tank and they are your fish. Enjoy your tank!
