Petsmart "RED" species, idea

most people wouldn't buy a car without doing research or rely solely on the car dealership to give them that information. I'm not sure why you wouldn't do the same at a pet store.

People still walk out of car dealerships with lemons or bad deals...and people will continue to walk out with fish they can't house or are incapable with their current stock. I place the blame more on the buyer then the seller but that's just me.

I don't think adding additional categories will hurt/help sales, however, an accurate info card SHOULD be in store

Most of the ones in our local Petsmart are correct for actual size, or closer than I've seen anywhere else. Pacu are labeled at 24", balas at 12", Oscars range between 10" and 12" for some reason (they differ between the types of oscars). Black Ghost Knives are labeled at 18" as well (browns at 12").

Where they aren't correct is when they recommend the minimum tank size for each fish. Pacu still say a 30 gallon despite the 24" max size for instance. 30 gallons for oscars as well.

Anyway, I think it's a combination of responsible buying AND having knowledgeable staff that's needed. Petsmart (and most other chain stores in particular, but also LFS) do a notoriously bad job in training their staff. However, a pet owner needs to research their pets as well.

I wouldn't blame just the seller if a buyer purchased a saint bernard puppy and expected it to be a lap dog because it would only grow to the size of the lap.

At least I don't have to worry about my local Wal-mart selling these fish without telling people about them. They just closed down there fish section as they are downsizing that department. I got the last platy and 5 albino tiger barbs. The tiger barbs went in with my 2 columbian sharks for the time being until I can get the 55 gallon tank set up the sharks and then I have to start changing them over to brackish water. Something I was never told about when I bought them from there.

Think about fish as dogs...

Some dogs play well with others, some don't.

Some dogs are fit for an apartment, some aren't.

You're always going to get the people who just HAVE to have that dog/fish, and then a year later "I can't care for this any longer..."

It's unfortunately the way the world works, and as much as it sucks, I highly doubt that you are going to change a pet store chains policy...

They're just in it for the $$.
