I have not seen many threads titled petsmart that were positive but even though I, like many people do not agree with the lack of knowledge of the people who work there there are many great things about Petsmart. The thing is even though alot o fpeople say they hate petsmart they would probably be kinda pissed if they closed. Even though they do not take the best care of there fish and do not have the best information the prices of equipment such as filter or air pumps or decorations will beat any prices from a family owned or non chain fish store. I ussulay do not buy my fish from Petsmart but even when I do I have had no problems with them but for all my equipment needs I go to petsmart. Just thought i should throw that out there.

I see your point...but I have to disagree, the lfs here that is family owned, has better prices than petsmart.
I shopped at petsmart and petco when I first started with the fish hobby. And my first fish were from there as well. I would say that both petco and petsmart seem immaculate compared to walmart fish tanks...so thats my positive input lol.

I agree about the prices but they need staff with knowledge and some proper training.

The Petsmart near me is nice, at least compared to the Petco. There aren't any great LFS near me though.

When there's an active coupon like now for $5 off $25, that's the only time I shop there cause their prices are a bit on the high side. That's when I pick up some maintenance stuff like carbon, food, and once in a while some fish. The coupon brings it down to a decent deal. Otherwise I would stick to online for dry goods and LFS for fish. They just don't have quite the exotic selection.

I shop at my PetSmart all the time.. nicest store I've seen in town and the manager even owns rays

Yea no matter where you go you ussualy cant beat prices you find on the internet. But some petsmarts are pretty good. One of the petsmarts near me has 2 or 3 people who work in the fish department that are very knowledgable and now what they are talking about. It really depends on the petsmart.

the problem with these companies is that they don't train well enough when it comes to things like fish/aquariums. I can't fault them for not having knowledgable fish people working at many stores, since petco/petsmart jobs are low paying and usually hire college kids and such. where I do fault them is in having little training, and that which they do have is lacking. When I worked at petco a few years ago I remember the regional employee trainer stating confidently that bettas are a type of goldfish, and when I told him "no they are not, they are anabantoids" he looked at me like I told him the desk was made of chocolate

Yeah the petsmart near me is very knowledgeable with their fish, the fish department manager even turns down customer buying fish she knows they cant properly house.
