Petting characins

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I enjoy hand feeding, but there is no way I would pet Chompers, my mala wolf. He's just not very cuddly. And I won't be petting MY catfish any time soon either.... but I have a very good reason for that.

Cool that yours doesn't mind though!

What kind of cat? I pet my uncles big ol tsn and red tail when I was down in Texas, they were both about 2.5 feet w/ the tsn lagging a few inches. Beautiful fish, literally acted like a cat at the edge of the pond!

I've been in the tank rearranging things or whatever, and there's been a few times that I've had to move Max by touching him. One thing is for sure, that fish is NOT afraid of me. He knows what a net is and avoids it, but he is NOT afraid of me. Ever since he nailed a skin-on salmon fillet that I was trying to give to my arowana and it was as cleaner cut than a human could do with a pair of scissors, I take this fish VERY seriously.

I think once he's about two feet, I might honestly be afraid to go into his tank without someone watching to tell me if the fish is coming. The big toothy characins can do grievous damage shockingly quickly, they're not the type that should be coddled on IMO.

oh yeah my red has blasted things from across the tank lightning fast, kicking up a lot of stuff. I would have a friend with me whenever I went in a tank with a 2 foot mala lol or aimara. I wouldn't do it with a mala or aimara, those could take your fingers off at like 10 inches long. I am afraid of it whippin around and biting me, but I also like that feeling of doing something potentially harmful (also am a skateboarder, snowboarder, surfer when I'm in the right area)

This is exactly how I have to feed my eels. A spotter needs to be there just cause of the way water changes the angle you view it from, easy to get confused how close they are. They hit the lids despite the water level being 4-5" lower. I'd take my chances hand feeding my wolf long before I'd do it with Mr. Nibblez. lol. I used to feed my Rhaph, but they're really predictable when it comes to food.... I try to pet my Dorado though, they don't like it, but doubt they're gonna take any fingers either. Have to be careful with some of this stuff..... lol

I really think a 2 footer would be able to take your hand off. and I wouldn't trust someone else reactions I would use tools instead haha or really tough long gloves. even then the bite force of a 2 footer would break your fingers.

that is a fish you need to take very seriously. my lil red is only gonna be 8 in. adult sized, so he may be able to take a finger but nothing more
