Why not? It's probably less sharp than regular silica play sand. I am using 6mm pea gravel from lowes and mines been fine.

Generally its cleaner and larger in size. I like pfs better for those 2 reasons.

Pfs over play sand any day. There should be no issues with your eel and the sand.
